"Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat, but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires. That’s the only reason I can see why people in the US continue to vote against their own interests." - John Steinbeck
What people mean by free market in this country is to be free to invest in a monopoly. The handy euphemism of "moat" takes care of our self serving irrational-ism.
Pristine Continent, Possibilities for Expansion, grabbing lots of land from Indians at the times when over crowded and malnourished Europeans were giving "birth" to socialism during revolutions of 1848 etc.. Humans seek the pass of least resistance. Up to this point, "development and expansion" provided a bird in the hands for majority of Americans whether they believed official mythology of rags to riches or not. Fighting against the plutocratic state offered much lesser chances for success than joining the rat race. Simple cost benefit analysis. I'm afraid the party of expansion is over, there is nowhere to run and sooner or later we'll catch up with Europe as far as social struggle and revolutions go. Sure, American propaganda is #1 in the world, but it can maintain illusions for just than long and not a second longer.
But it did. We're about as socialist as it can get. Free health care, food stamps, government housing subsidies. It's become cradle to grave socialism in the USA.

The biggest surge of wealth in this country came with land with no land lords.
* Indian genocide mostly from disease early in this country
* Rail roads opening the West
* Post WII after the water projects.
All of the above prevented land monopolies and created cheap land. We think its our "system".
Come on now we did socialism right. The color of socialism is red and if its red ink you socialize it.
