Just last night I spoke to a friend whose wife had collected 99 weeks of unemployment benefits. Those benefits expired at the end of December, he proclaimed. Mysteriously enough, he also mentioned that she got a call from the local Victoria's Secret offering her a job two days after an interview she participated in last week.
Anecdotal, yes. But I find this to be highly suspect. What are the chances of not finding a job in the previous 99 weeks that unemployment benefits were flowing, but on the 100th week.......when UI benefits are exhausted..... all of a sudden a job presents itself?
How many millions of Americans are milking my wallet dry in order to live on Easy Street?
Every bum will find a way not to work, if given the incentive not to do so. Liberalism is a mental disorder.
Easy street? that's what $275 is to you? Dunno about others but my base expenses are about $2000 / month. If I had UE it would be 1/2 of what I need to pay my bills.
I hope the OP's street is easy on $275, but I doubt it really is.

Point taken....but to find a job on week 100...after 99 weeks of unemployment....suggests either a grand coincidence took place....or she wasn't hurting too bad financially during those 99 weeks.
Who knows. Maybe she was making as much or more from her unemployment as she will be as a store clerk. I wouldn't accept any job if it paid less than my unemployment benefits unless there was opportunity for career growth. There is no pride in being financially stupid IMO.

Which is why unemployment should be means tested. This would allow funds to go to those who are truly down on their luck. It would also allow the taxpayer to stop funding European vacations and new shoes for those who view unemployment as a vacation.
Plenty of people who made six figures who are drawing unemployment. There are also people out there who are genuinely struggling in the Obama/Bush economy.

Surely, you aren't just now realizing this are you? There are COUNTLESS threads on CD where people have been offered jobs that were "beneath" them or they refused to look for jobs that aren't in their field of expertise.
People either want to work or they don't. There are precious few places in this country (although there are some) where WORK CANNOT BE FOUND. Otherwise, it is simply that the person does not want to work, but prefers to have the tax payers support them.
Easy street? You believe struggling to make ends meet on 60% less than you would have been making in your previous job? Yes, I said 60%. Here in NJ, if you previously made $70K per year, the max your getting from unemployment INSURANCE is $28K per year. Those who made $30K per year are now only getting $12K.
And you don't think that many of those unemployed people are working for cash on the side?
