In SE Pennsylvania, we're seeing an increase in homicides, burglaries, armed robberies. Since Christmas all we've been reading about is bank robberies, home invasions, shootings, burglaries, convenience store holdups, food delivery stickups, burglary rings, and sadly shootings and stabbings.
Its like something set off a powder keg and crime and violence jumped. Is it just here or is it happening anyplace else?
Our city is starting a task force to deal with the problem and Philly's mayor has had some strong words about his city's residents.

I would say that we have had too much unemployment for a very long time and that has influenced all of what you say. Anytime you get between Thanksgiving and Christmas there is always a rise in the rate of crimes involving taking of money. Of course, that is a very obvious thing to look for.

I have an alternative hypothesis though. Crime has moved to a social acceptance in many places. Marijuana growing and selling, for instance, isn't viewed with the disdain that it once was. Its generally accepted by most people.

In my neighborhood on the East side of Louisville, there was a big spike in car-break ins at the malls around the holidays. Also, there was one big story about a solider from Ft. Campbell who was shopping on the opposite side of Louisville whose wife's SUV got broken into and their Christmas gifts got swiped along with a cell phone and GPS. After hearing of this a lot of people donated money to help replace the stuff. I'd attribute it to desperation around the holidays combined with unemployment.
