Do you have any clue how far-reaching the effects of $5 a gallon gas would be? Do you have any idea how many things are delivered to stores and the like by trucks that use gas or diesel fuel?
I fully understand. I also fully understand that people adjust their behavior. The money the average American would save by pulling their fat, lazy behinds off the sofa to walk to get something would make up for the delta in prices of some goods.
Thigns in an economy adjust. The only reason why this is a constant issue here is that gas has been far too cheap for far too long. It's causes overly strong effects of elasticity towards energy in the economy.
Higher prices is definitely a trend. They spike and then come down a bit but never back to the starting price. Then they spike again and come back down.
Over time though they always go up..the spikes and retreats keep the people happy.."oh look, gas came down."
In 1996 when I moved to Texas gas was $.99/gallon. I remember that because where I came from (Florida) it was already over a dollar and I kept asking if the "1" fell off the sign ($1.99)

Very good analysis.
If it snowed around here, maybe I could hook up a team of fat-bodies to my sled to pull me around.

I'm under no obligation to subsidize ethanol production. If they want it subsidized, they can ask their share-holders to cough up the money.
Wait until EPA Tier 3 is implemented. You'll be going from 30 ppm Sulfur to 10 ppm Sulfur and your gasoline prices will be going up again.

Why are we obligated to subsidize oil????
Ethanol subsidies already ended. I would like to see the $2+ a gallon oil & gasoline subsidies gone so ethanol can compete on a level playing field. Oil companies are terrified of the free market. That is why our military forces countries to sell their oil & only in US Dollars. Maybe you should also consider $10 a gallon you are paying for that.
Schott pointed out that one comprehensive report found that subsidies for the oil industry total up to $280 billion annually, representing up to $2 per gallon of gasoline.
A barrel of oil is down a lil bit to around $98.50. A gal of gas dropped 10 cents to $3.60 down the street & $3.50 a gallon @ arco (about 10 miles away in redlands on ca street & redlands blvd).
