"Gay parents 'tend to be more motivated, more committed than heterosexual parents on average, because they chose to be parents,' said Abbie Goldberg, a psychologist at Clark University in Massachusetts who researches gay and lesbian parenting. Gays and lesbians rarely become parents by accident, compared with an almost 50 percent accidental pregnancy rate among heterosexuals, Goldberg said. 'That translates to greater commitment on average and more involvement.'""

You can find a crackpot psychologist to say anything that supports your agenda, regardless of what that agenda is. You could find one to say that children would be better off being raised by wolves than loving parents. (Straight or Gay) There are good parents and bad parents in every group. The main problem is there are too many "parents" that are being their childrens "friends" instead of being a parent.

Are over 150,000 Psychologists who are members of the American Psychological Association 'crackpots'?

Or over 60,000 pediatricians from the American Academy of Pediatrics?

From the American Academy of Pediatrics:

A growing body of scientific literature demonstrates that children who grow up with 1 or 2 gay and/or lesbian parents fare as well in emotional, cognitive, social, and sexual functioning as do children whose parents are heterosexual. Children’s optimal development seems to be influenced more by the nature of the relationships and interactions within the family unit than by the particular structural form it takes.

From the American Psychological Association - Amicus Briefs on Gay and Lesbian Parenting.

Overall, the belief that children of lesbian and gay parents suffer deficits in personal development has no empirical foundation.
.....

The results of some studies suggest that lesbian mothers' and gay fathers' parenting skills may be superior to those of matched heterosexual couples. For instance, Flaks, Fischer, Masterpasqua, and Joseph (1995) reported that lesbian couples' parenting awareness skills were stronger than those of heterosexual couples. This was attributed to greater parenting awareness among lesbian nonbiological mothers than among heterosexual fathers. In one study, Brewaeys and her colleagues (1997) likewise reported more favorable patterns of parent-child interaction among lesbian as compared to heterosexual parents, but in another, they found greater similarities (Vanfraussen, Ponjaert-Kristoffersen, & Brewaeys, 2003).

My own personal opinion? YES... Most psychologists and psychiatrists are crackpots. I have worked around them and find them for the most part a half a bubble off. I can only say that I have as a straight parent, raised 4 upstanding college graduates that contribute to their society and have also become excellent parents. They are happy and well adjusted. I doubt many parents, gay or straight could have done a better job.

From the US National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study: a 24 year longitudinal study of children of lesbian parents published in Pediatrics - The Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

"...the 17-year-old daughters and sons of lesbian mothers were rated significantly higher in social, school/academic, and total competence and significantly lower in social problems, rule-breaking, aggressive, and externalizing problem behavior than their age-matched counterparts in Achenbach's normative sample of American youth."

Additionally, no adolescents had reported being sexually or physically abused by their parents. This compares to 26% of American adolescents overall who report parent or caregiver physical abuse. 8.3% report sexual abuse.

This has nothing to do with being gay, but nice try. It's like saying people who are committed to being mathematicians make better mathematicians.

gay parents tend to be slightly better than straight parents, but it has nothing to do with being gay or straight. it has everything to do with the fact that gay couples have to jump through a lot more hoops to have a child, and so people who are willing and able to jump through so many hoops tend to be better off to begin with. in other words, to cover the huge costs of a surrogate mother, sperm donation, or adoption, parents tend to be financially better off and emotionally more stable and determined to have a child.

heterosexual parents are more at risk for having children by accident and for not having the financial or emotional means to support a child. again, it has nothing to do with sexual orientation itself, beyond the fact that straight couples can conceive a baby in seconds for free. if opposite-sex couples were forced to jump through the same hoops as same-sex couples, they would on average be better parents. likewise, a lesbian who was impregnated through rape, for example, isn't any more likely to be a good parent on average than her straight sister.

straight parents that jump through the same hoops tend to be better prepared for parenthood as well. for example, my parents adopted me and they had to jump through a lot of hoops, so they were very committed to having me as a child. they are heterosexual. on the other hand, my ex, who is lesbian, wanted to go out and have a baby by a man she didn't even know (which is why she's my ex, lol). if she had gone through with that plan, she would be no more prepared for parenthood than the straight teen girl who ends up pregnant. so again, it has nothing to do with orientation itself, but the surrounding social factors that are more likely to coexist with same-sex vs. opposite-sex couples. the key words there are also 'are more likely' because we are simply talking statistics here.
