What would make the country a better place would be if society supported the mothers and the children when they are very young, up to 5 years old and maybe this problem doesn't happen to begin with.
The problem with this country is the way people think.
I am in favor of better schools and especially pre-school programs and use the money saved from less prisons and police.
Really? Mothers need the support of society? That will fix everythihg? How much support? How about 300K for one family??

So by the time 8-year-old Liquarry was fatally shot in the gut by his 7-year-old cousin in Liquarry's apartment in the Grove Hall section of Dorchester, the boy had experienced a merry-go-round of caretakers, been subjected to a succession of criminal role models, and had seen more mayhem and misery in his short life than most people endure in a lifetime.

A Globe analysis shows that in the final year of Liquarry's life, government agencies spent at least $314,000 on his family, about half for social services and government benefits, in an extraordinary effort to save the family, especially the children.

Oh...those poor kids! That wicked, evil old man set a trap for them to knock him off his bike and assault him and these poor unfortunate kids were caught up in his evil plot!
Tazer or rubber bullets? Seriously? Pathetic....
I say people of any age should defend themselves against bullies by any means neccessary.
The old man killed someone because he was attacked and outnumbered by a group of kids who were obviously a threat to his life. You don't seem to understand who the victim was here, who was at fault, and who caused the entire incident. People like you are beyond pathetic. How dare you blame the VICTIM for defending his life from a vicious attack!
EXACTLY!!!!!!
And those "old men" have the RIGHT to go anywhere in America WITHOUT FEARING FOR THEIR LIVES OR OF BEING MUGGED!!
I don't care if he shot one over a piece of bubble gum...it would be his bubble gum and some ass(O) has no right to take it from him....I have zero compassion for a thief or a bully,if somebody leaves one dying in the dirt I couldn't work up enough sympathy to care in the least little bit as it could be my Mom,wife, daughters etc that he attacked next.

I carry all the time. To be honest, if someone walks up to me and demands my wallet I'm going to hand it to them because if I shoot them it will cost me allot more than I have in my wallet to sort things out. However, nothing in the OP article states that these punks asked for the bike. It seems they assaulted him for their sick pleasure as is so often the case these days.
According to police, they had knocked him off his bike and two were assaulting him in order to rob him.WFMZ is the local news station. He's not being charged and I hope they respect his privacy and don't publish his name.
It's a generic term that has come to signify the ability to defend yourself without having to fear legal repercussions. While some states do call it "Castle Doctrine," others do not. Those states that use that term usually do so because application of this law is confined to the person's residence. Other jurisdictions call it "stand-your-ground" law to indicate that this right is not just confined to your habitation. The latter set of law tends to be much more extensive in the permissibility of force to defend yourself. Depending on the jurisdiction, such laws sometimes incorporate the "duty to retreat" while others don't.
Each jurisdiction has regulated immunity following defensive action in different ways. Even though the term "Castle Doctrine" may be used in common communication of members of a given jurisdiction, it behooves people to actually research what, exactly, the specific laws in their area are. Assumptions can quickly lead to conviction...
You act almost happy that this happened. To me it's a tragedy. Our citizens are shooting each other on the streets.
Not for no reason though. Some of our citizens think they own the streets and can take whatever they want from others even when they are not fully adults.
Defending yourself against physical assault is not a crime.

I have the same thoughts...talking is one thing, but the second that I think that the talking is over then the situation for both of us will change rapidly.
As I stated,I despise a thief or a bully with a passion...luckily I live in an area that hates them too and where everyone knows everyone else...if a person's home or car gets broken into all they have to do is wait a few days and everyone knows who did it...most around here skip SOP and instead of calling the law, they handle it themselves...which is usually VERY unfortunate for the one who done wrong...judges give them a slap on the wrist, these guys give them a few cracks in the skull and knees with a axe handle or Pick axe handle(aka a "store bought billy club" around here) and the thief/bully ends up moving to another town....I've watched(participated when was neccessary) it over and over.
You can choose to be a victim or not in most cases, but I want to at least HAVE that choice to make.

The older man was assaulted, plain and simple.
