When I was 16 and a sophmore in H.S in the late 80s, I was able to get a 5 hr job after school. My 17 year old has been trying to get a job since her b'day in June. The hiring age has apparently been changed to 18? When did that happen? How are teens suppose to learn responsibility and work ethics, if they have to wait until their 18 years old to get a job? Is this the same in other area's of the country?

What do you mean "changed to 18?"

If that's the case, I don't support the age change at all. On my 14th birthday, my parents took me to the courthouse to get a work permit. A week later I was working my first after school job. I haven't quit working since then, even during college.

The last thing we need is our national work ethic to be ravaged by some do-gooder with ridiculous ideas (ie. politicians).

exactly...on my 16th B'day, I got my working papers, quit the track and cross country team and got a job working in Macy's distribution center. When my daughter turned 16, I thought it would be a start to have her to volunteer at a residential home. Now that she's 17, She began to look for a job, but no one will hire you unless your 16, which is crazy. There are so many young people out there that need to get a job, to wait until their 18 is crazy.

Most 16-year-olds around here can work part time.

Well call me a mama bear, but the closest Papa Johns or pizza hut to us is in Newark and that ain't happening. Dominos, you have to be 18 as well. I wanted her to try to get this experience before she went away to college this summer so she could understand how to juggle a job and class load.

I'm guessing they simply don't need 16 or 17 year olds. It's not their job to make sure teenagers learn responsibility.

I'm located in NJ, I'm not sure if this is all over NJ, but definitely in my area.
