I've never lived in a purely socialist nation so i don't know how one rises. But i do know that in the many socialist nations on Earth, people do rise. I don't know about upward mobility in Venezuela because it's not a place i concern myself with nor do i know much about it. Perhaps one CAN'T rise in Venezuela. But i do know that there is a privileged class there that predates the Chavez Administration and as far as i know, still exists.
Ugh, not this Germany and Sweden discussion. Neither are socialist or even close. We're talking about places like Venezuela, Cuba, etc.
If you don't know much about Venezuela, why even try to defend your position on this topic?

Venezuela isn't Cuba, and by you making that inference shows that you know nothing more about Venezuela than i do.
All you know is that you're supposed to hate Chavez (because of your political bent), and so you follow orders and do so even though his existence has no bearing on yours.
The bottom line is that Venezuelans can have dollars if they can obtain them. His daughter somehow obtained them, which p*sses you off for some silly ass reason that makes no sense.
There is nothing more to this story except what you're trying to squeeze out of it.
There is nothing illegal about having dollars in Venezuela. You cannot buy dollars through the banks there, but you can (legally) take dollars for goods or services from people who arrive in the country with dollars. Yes, this means that most people would not normally possess dollars, except of course many who work or live near a tourist destination or something like that.
I have read through all of the comments here, and I will say that I agree with detroit,,, that summer appears to be trying to make something out of nothing. I am sure that a number of people who own posadas (bed and breakfast) regularly have a good amount of dollars.
Yes, the elite class in Venezuela is mostly made up of the "old money" which many obtained by selling out their own country to the oil barons from the north during the days of the puppet oppressive governments. These elite still exist there and they are the ones who try to make trouble with Chavez, who by the way was elected by the people in elections that are considered to be more fair and proper than those in the US. Most of the media is still owned by them and they regularly bash
Chavez on the TV and in newspapers (never heard of a "dictator" tolerating that). These elite scum long for the days when they could use the countries resources solely for their own gain and run the poor people off their land just so they could have a mansion.
I wonder why "summer" is so interested in bashing Chavez/Venezuela. Summer apparently knows little about the place but seems intent on running it down,,,,, sounds familiar,,,, like propaganda from a paid shill.

Believe me, i'm still trying to get this guy and other conservatives reasoning as to why they're so obsessed with Chavez and Venezuela. Haven't received an answer yet.
A Latin American girl holding up $25, the outrage, stop the presses!!!! I guess some people are under the impression that dollars are not available in Latin America.

I'm interested in Chavez but not due to any political orientation I may have.
He's a rather flamboyant individual in his proclamations about things like us maybe causing his cancer or the Haiti earthquakes so there is that angle.
More importantly though, he's a complex individual who has strong convictions about his worldview and if he has to trample the rights of the people it's ok, because it's for their own good. Is he any worse than the string of corrupt scum before him? No.
