The tracking hardware doesn't (it's just for recording the path it's taking and locating it once it touches down), but I have a Canon point-n-shoot with customized firmware for that. I'm also considering including a HD video camera, so I can capture stills and video simultaneously.

When all is said and done, I'll have hard data on the temperatures at 30k+ feet - the balloon should near 100k before it blows.

Hey Don - I know you're out there. Why don't you do one of these, too? Or at least find a local group that does it, and ask if you can help out. I'm sure that they'd be happy to have another body to help search for balloons that have completed their missions and returned to earth. You can get your temperature data directly from the source, and have some fun while you're at it! Life's too short to be spending all of it worrying over nothing.

Perchance do you read The Register and their high altitude projects?

LOHAN's fantastical flying truss cleared for lift-off ? The Register

LOHAN is their new project, this is their previous one: (at 3:40 they launch, promise you'll get a kick out of it)

The rule of thumb is what? a -2 degree drop per 1,000 feet?

don9 says what? +115 degrees at 30,000 feet?

I'll bet 100 bucks after you prove and post your results don9 will come up with another one of his jewels (probably blame President Obama) and wriggle out of his previous statements.

Besides the results I hope you post some pictures....

How do you explain the increase in temperature of the atmosphere at 500,000 ft.

Simple, read this:

Quote:
Most of you have experienced the fact that if you drive to the mountains, the air is cooler. The reason for this is simple: when wind blows air to a higher altitude, the air expands, and when air expands, it gets cooler. So any air blown to higher altitude is cooler. Likewise, when air is blown from higher altitude to a lower altitude, it gets compressed. When air is compressed, it gets warmer. As long as wind continually mixes the atmosphere, the air at the ground will usually be warmer than the air several thousand feet higher. Typically the air gets cooler by abouat 1 C (about 9/5 Farenheit) for every 500 feet increase in altitude. If you fly in an airplane at 50,000 feet, you may be surprised to hear the pilot say that the outside air temperature is -100 degrees F. But that is not surprising. That is 100 times greater than 500 feet, so you expect 100 times as big a temperature drop. 100 x 9/5 F is 180 degrees cooler. 180 degrees cooler than 80 is -100 F.

However, once you get to about 60,000 feet, we get to the ozone layer. This layer absorbs ultraviolet radiation (called UV radiation) from the sun, protecting us from these cancer causing rays. But because the ozone absorbs the light, it causes this layer to be warmer. So the coldest layer is actually about 50,000 ft. high.

God you conspiracy know-it-all nuts are hilarious....

I guess you were expecting to get a reply about the top secret government ionic transdimensional generator causing it (in conjunction with the top secret chemicals being sprayed into the atmosphere of course)...

Geoengineering and chemtrails are two totally different issues, if you had bothered to follow this thread from it's inception you would have seen some posters trying to hijack this thread with this conspiracy about 500 posts ago.

And like they were told >500 posts ago, it still holds true now, open a new thread on geoengineering.....

Great video for all those wanting to know the truth about what is going on. Of course, the deniers don't want this exposed.

Last week I was looking at the sky during break at work and saw many contrails, I was going to take a picture but having a camera out at work is a no-no, we were having unusually warm weather so maybe they were CHEMTRAILS

They were a pretty white on the light blue evening sky.
