I believe a President should have experienced his (or her) entire lifetime in this country. An American President needs that childhood experience growing up in this country to frame who they become, and how they can relate to people when they are not in positions of power (as adults hold). Look at the past Presidents: Clinton, Obama, Reagan, Carter, Nixon, all were sharply shaped by their respective childhoods in this country. You just can't experience that growing up outside the country.
There were very legitimate reasons for writing this requirement at the time.
That doesn't in any way address my point. If a kid is born in Canada and moves to America when he is 3, what does he experience in those three years that would make him so unqualified to be president? It is completely illogical and nativist and if voters believe a person has not had enough experience as an American, they should be able to decide that at the ballot box.
Yes,
"Natural born" citizens acquire citizenship merely as an accident of birth. Meanwhile immigrants make a conscious choice to become citizens, it is something they earn and respect. Most "Natural Born" citizens would probably fail the citizenship test.
Testimony at the Georgia Ballot Hearing. Stunning facts of grave concern for national security presented before Judge Malihi. Recorded on 31 January 2012.

In the 18th century, it was natural to feel a loyalty to the land where one was born. The founders had that in mind with that requirement. No matter how long you were in this country, you would be drawn to choose the mother country over this one.
OF course, in this day, such a loyalty might seem anachronistic.
