The only reason people are living to 85 or beyond is because they left the stress of working and enjoyed single payer health care starting at 65. Postpone both to 70 and fewer people will make it to that age. Now the plan seems to be deem them unemployable at 50 so they don't even make it to 65. How's that for a market solution

Japan, where folks live the longest, just raised their retirement age from 60 to 61. It was 55 until the late 90s. Then it will go up one year every three years til it caps at 65 in 2025.
They had no choice but to do it. Too many elderly with a slow birth rate and not enough workers to support it all.
More and more experts say we need to raise the retirement age to 70 but I wonder if these experts ever looked for work at age 65?
If we do raise the eligibility age for Social Security and Medicare to 70, what should the government do to see that older people can get jobs?
What "experts" say this? Besides, it's an unfair proposal. Although life expectancy is rising, that rise is concentrated in those with white collar jobs. So, janitors have to work longer because lawyers are living longer.
People who are in their 40's and 50's that got layed off can't find jobs nevermind work til 70.
Age discrimination is alive and well in corporate America because they just don't want to pay those types of salaries for experienced folks.
You've got that right. I've been looking for a job for over a year now. I did get some interest when I removed all dates from my resume. I got two requests for a resume WITH dates, then nothing. I'm in my mid 50's and very worried about my employment situation. I am not ready to retire so what do I do if I can't find work?
Both my husband and I are in our 60s, and both of us lost our jobs this year. I was just able to get a part time job, but so far he has not found anything. That folks can work to 70 is true, that anyone will allow them to, is false.
I agree with the poster who said there should be affirmative action for companies to hire older workers.

If they want us to work longer, they have to create jobs for us.

I just put my tinfoil hat on and I see this "raise the retirement age" as another corporate ploy to dilute the labor pool, which will force down wages and benefits. "American" corporations that haven't already abandoned the US for communist China are eagerly hiring illegal aliens at below minimum wage. This is just another facet of the race to the bottom, which benefits the already wealthy at the expense of everyone else.

SS today is 66 while medicare is still 65.
People aged 50 today can't find jobs due to age discrimination.
