You must be talking about the Altamont music festival, which had nothing to do with Buddy Holly (he was already dead).
It achieved notoriety because some dimwit had hired the Hell's Angels as security and they beat a man to death at the foot of the stage.
Not to make light of it, but it was one man, one Angel who stabbed the guy, who they thought was going to jump on stage.
He was drug crazed and had already tried to get on stage and then came back with a gun. Pointing it toward the stage, the one Angel punched and stabbed him with a knife.
The stories have been so out there, I'm just finishing up a book written by Bill Wyman.
THIS!!
The day the music died is the day Buddy Holly was killed in a plane crash.
to mean the various times in American pop music when some random event happened to refocus tastes and attention to the next wave of pop music/culture or to abruptly end a certain artists style and create a vacuum for another to ascend.
