Clashes as Greek Parliament debates bailout law *| ajc.com (http://www.ajc.com/business/clashes-as-greek-parliament-1346849.html - broken link)

Quote:
ATHENS, Greece — Anarchists and police fought running battles in central Athens Sunday, as Greek lawmakers debated legislation that would introduce severe austerity measures to stave off bankruptcy.

he clashes broke out around 6 p.m. local time (1600 GMT) as tens of thousands of people, responding to calls from unions to protest the measures, streamed into Syntagma Square facing Parliament.

Peaceful protesters fled to adjacent streets as anarchists threw bottles, rocks, pieces of marble and firebombs at police, who responded with tear gas and stun grenades.

Police say an officer was injured by a flare shot at him from a gun. He was taken to hospital.

Among those affected by the tear gas were well-known composer Mikis Theodorakis, 86, and veteran leftist politician Manolis Glezos, 89. The two have been actively campaigning against Greece accepting a €130 billion ($171.46 billion) bailout from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund that would help Greece avoid bankruptcy as early as next month, when a €14.5 billion bond matures.

Same goes for permitted protests. They are like alibi feel-good events without any effects. Any demonstrations of serious extent and effect are not permitted in the first place.

I find it odd when conservatives complain about leftists demonstrating violently when at the same time it is conservatives promoting guns and wars all the time...
I have yet to see gun enthusiasts promote gun violence, only the right to own them. The left got us into Vietnam..thank you LBJ. We have seen violent leftist in south America and what arming them can do for a peaceful population. The left is no more innocent of these attrocities than the right and will use violence to gain control if need be. So sit back, smoke your pipe and ponder the oddities.

I wonder at what point the police say to hell with this and stand down?

Riots spread across Athens, at least 7 buildings set ablaze before key Greek debt vote - The Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/greek-lawmakers-debate-legislation-introducing-severe-austerity-measures-violence-outside/2012/02/12/gIQAiuEp8Q_story.html?hpid=z2 - broken link)

Rioting spread across central Athens and at least seven buildings went up in flames amid mass protests late Sunday, as lawmakers debated harsh cutbacks demanded to keep the country solvent and within the eurozone.

TV footage showed a three-story corner building completely engulfed in flames with riot officers looking on from the street, and firefighters trying to douse the blaze. The buildings set ablaze included a bank, a mobile phone dealership, a glassware store and a cafeteria, the fire department said. It was not immediately clear whether there was anyone inside the burning buildings.
Clashes erupted across the city center after more than 100,000 protesters marched to parliament to rally against drastic austerity cuts that will force firings in the civil service and slash the minimum wage.

Once they make that call I think they will need to call in the military because the local police are just far too outnumbered.

Once they call in the military the ballgame changes.

Even if they pass these cuts they won't be able to implement them. I think a military coup is a real possibility here or some sort of declaration of martial law.

The austerity bill passed.

34 buildings on fire, massive looting and rioting and has now spread to other towns and islands.
Estimated 80,000 to 100,000 people took to the streets.
1 in 5 workers will get layed off and the other 4 will have their pay reduced 22%.
Private sector investors will lose 70% of the capital they invested in Greek bonds.

Of course they are- just as they will be in the US if Obama is re-elected and racks our deficit up to $24 trillion. This is what the leftists/communists want- economic anarchy such that they can "save the population" and install a communist regime.

Obama is clumsy and readily transparent. Fortunately, he will be out of office within the year and we will be saved of the fate that awaits Greece. No one, except liberals, pine to be slaves and experience the misery of those who lived in the USSR, eastern satelites, Cuba, and North Korea.
