Let's see! Americans aren't allowed to marry whoever they want, the government is always in people's personal lives, gotta have a marriage license to get married (married couples don't only belong each other, they belong to the State).
Do Americans really want the government in their personal lives, telling them what to do and how to live?
The bible thumpers on the religious right want exactly that. You can't drink here until you're 21, you can't really swear on TV, no nudity, extreme penalties for anything deemed obscene, NC-17 movies can't realistically be shown anywhere, etc. The funny thing is a lot of them babble about government having too much control when in actuality, they want government to have too much control.

Amazing that when you ask this question about gay marriage, you get an overwhelming majority of yes votes. But when I ask this question about the gov't enacting smoking bans and trampling all over the rights of property owners, it seems to go the other way. You are blind america, totaly blind.
The people that scream bloody murder about birth control at Catholic churches are usually for the drug war, for removing the choice of abortion, etc.
The people who are for abortions don't want to allow private business owners to make decisions on who they serve, who they hire, etc. Or to let states decide on matters of marriage, which is where things like that belong.
Both sides play "PC" police when it suits their views.
But this assumes that those elected to office are somehow more noble and more all-knowing than the simple-minded general public.
It assumes that those elected to office represent the people that elected them. That is a false assumption. They represent those that financed their campaign.

I agree with most of what you said with the exception of NC-17 movies in mainstream theaters. That is actually the policy of the MPAA and NATO (National Association of Theatre Owners) which punishes theaters for showing the majority of NC-17 movies.
I disagree with the policy, but that particular one is the result of the private sector, not government. Although, there are certain city ordinances in some localities which do restrict the showing of "adult" movies.
Government should be out of our wallets (economic freedom), our lives (social freedom) and our bedrooms (privacy). Government should exist in very minimal form, only performing the functions set aside for them in the US Constitution Article 1, Section 8. In a civilized society, as long as its between consenting adults and there is no coercion, it is not the governments business whom I sleep with or marry. It's not the governments' business to police pornography, prostitution, drugs or anything else which they think is "immoral".
Minimum Government. Maximum Freedom. That's what our Founders fought for.
