Chicago teacher year = 1206.25 hours. source my link above. It may be less if they are allowed time off the 193 days.

Avg without overtime is around 1920 hours.

Having grown up near and known some teachers. Most did bring some work home every day so add that in. Most took most of the summer off so little credit there. Part of the problem calculating is the wild variance of how much done at home. My sons KG teacher did ALOT of preplanning at home. It showed. His current teacher is OK but pales in comparison.

Do actually know any teachers? They work much longer days than that. And they work at home. And sometimes, they use some of that wonderful salary to help kids out like by them notebooks and folders and pens because Mom and Dad are too busy getting high.

So they start-out asking for much more, hoping to stay the same or get a small COL increas. And no increased benefit costs to the members. It's the purpose of the union, any union, to protect its members and get what it can for them. Not different than what the U.S. Chamber of Commerce or other trade associations to on behalf of their members. Business gets the bigger reward for its efforts, though. Highlighting the issue now is just so much fuss over nothing. Wait and see what develops.
A rational post amongst an ocean of jibberish. It's refreshing.

I laugh when clueless republicanazis say ignorant stuff like the op. Little do they know that teachers in Chicago have had zero pay increases the past few years. they need raises like this just to keep up with cost of living, with back pay raises owed. And yes, let's hope a major tax contributor like Chicago fails and thus less money can be siphoned off to support poor ignorant bible thumping southerners

And if someone gives it to them, is it the Teachers fault for asking for more, or is it the mayors fault for giving them more?

You decide.

The city always has the option to say "ok, then quit"

Fairly compensated. Listen, I think the raise is outrageous. At the same time I appreciate teachers and the job they do. I don't think education is evil or some communist plot to brainwash our kids. Probably because I've always enjoyed reading, even as a child.
