I disagree with the right-wing misconception of the quote, thinking you become conservative with age and wisdom.
When you see half your paycheck go to government for redistribution of wealth you get conservative fast.
When you see no change in the number of hands out for government employment, welfare, free this or that at someone else's expense, you get conservative.
When you see Democrats wanting to punish success and foster class-ism, racism and false fear in seniors; you become more conservative.
When you hear left wing Supreme Court Justices referring to the Constitution as too old or passť to use in the inspiration of a new country you get conservative.
When radical Islamics cut reporters heads off for you to see on you tube and liberals suggest we only need to sit down and talk with them over a sandwich you get more conservative.
If you have seen the decline of the USA since Kennedy allowed unions in government and before that what has happened with the birth of great society social programs; you get more conservative.

When you hear Democrats say just raise the debt ceiling and calling all budget cuts not of the military an attack on people you become more conservative.
Women who get children in marriage who see all the crap being given to their kids minds in school books, often they get more conservative.

When here in CA we are told you will be fined $1000 for throwing a football or Frisbee on the beach because big government said so; you become more conservative.

And on and on....

Conservatism is the application of common sense like people with a check book would have in a family IMO. Big government has none of that. Liberals have none of that IMO.

The Westboro Baptists are a good example of both bigotry and religious zealotry. I never said all Democrats were communists. I said Democrats vehemently abhor the US and have always wanted to see it destroyed. Many Democrats embrace communism for that purpose, but many also have other means to achieve the same goal.

Liberal freaks developing a study for the consumption of other liberal freaks is suppose to impress someone? I can show you dozens of studies that conclude liberalism to be a mental disease. The good news is that since we have mapped the entire human genome we can eventually find the obvious defect and develop a cure.

So do not give up hope, you can be cured eventually.
I don't care if this gets me in trouble on here but you are one vile vapid nasty person. You seem like you have a stick shoved up your a$$.

I am done arguing with you because it is obviously not getting through to you.

There is a generation that is NOT liberal and not conservative - THIS generation - has little heart for society - for the weak - and each other...So this generation is not conservative either - they do not conserve anything - that is good and tried by time. SO what do we have? Is it the me generation ? Is it the we generation? - I would say that it might be - the hopeless generation - that looks upon this life as the end - and they might as well make a personal heaven of it - and go down in flames enjoying themselves.

First of all, I have said numerous times, I am not talking about socialism or communism.

second of all, both parties as they stand right now want big government just in different ways.

-Patriot Act, unconstitutional
-Military Industrial Complex taking over the world for oil
-Christian "morals" on gays, sex, and woman.
-wanting all Muslims deported (I have heard many conservatives say this)
the list goes on... so please stop with the small government crap.

what you see on the modern left, is generally a goal on maximizing individual liberty for everybody, or at least for as many people as possible. That's key. Again, as opposed to Libertarianism which tends to look to create a power vacuum which can then be exploited, and that exploitation is freedom. Yeah but no.
Things such as accessible-post secondary education, single-payer healthcare, and a strong social safety net are ways in which we actually increase individual liberty, by allowing people the opportunity to succeed, without making the cost for failure unrecoverable. As well, just in general creating economic environments in which more people can succeed at ALL levels, again, increases individual liberty.
It's also key to while not entirely, but to put the fingers on the scale a bit to correct power imbalances, ideally.
So all this is just a bit on why to be honest, modern progressive theory is better than Libertarianism in terms of seeking individual liberty.

Glitch, you make me laugh. Do I think the Democrats are perfect and the liberals are the best thing for this country? No of course not. Then again, Republicans aren't perfect (and they never will be) and the conservatives aren't the best thing for this country (nor should they be). Just so we're clear on this - I'm Centrist. Dead smack in the middle. There's no liberal agenda driving me and I'm not particularly fond of the Democrats, but this personal attack you just took...that's going too far, man.

Look, first and foremost I respect the fact that your conservative. That's great! Someone has to be and by the gods it may as well be you! Awesome! But, I ask, who are you to tell anyone who considers themselves liberal they have a mental disease and that most Democrats have clinged to communism? The same could be applied in the opposite sense in that there are certainly people who believe those who consider themselves conservative to have mental problems and that the Republicans are Fascists or some kind of totalitarian loving group.

Fact is, all you're touting here is opinion and that's it. You can blow hot steam and use all the loaded statements you want, but it's all smoke and mirrors to hide the fact that it's your opinion. Also, you can post all the links you want about some conservative driven theories and experiments about the disease that is liberalism. Truth of the matter is they won't be taken seriously because they are obviously biased driven. Science doesn't take sides, it seeks the truth.

Anyway, bro, I know you won't accept this and try to understand. That's cool. So instead I'll just end with a parting gift:

Cheers!

Firstly, just because there's an "old saying" (which, i believe, can be attributed to churchill) doesn't make it so. I think this cultural artifact is promoted precisely because it has such powerful sway; as one gets older, the pressure to conform gets stronger and stronger, and if you feel that you "should" become conservative, then you're inclined to switch that way.

I think that, if we unpack the phrase, perhaps you are more small-c conservative about, for instance, trashing your neighborhood because you have more of a sense of community. you own more so you're less apt to leave on a whim to travel. you're set in your musical tastes and less likely to try new music. in this sense, you want to conserve what you perceive to be the "right way."

politically, though, i think the phrase is bs. why should you support unions and environmental science and health care and then suddenly change? it's a total canard. why should you suddenly become more racist (as a capital-c Conservative) and warmongering?

If you're 20 and not a liberal it means that the 13 years of K thru 12 indoctrination didn't work.
It means you didn't buy the 'republicans want dirty air, dirty water, they are killing the polar bears, they're only for the rich, wal-mart is evil' mantra.
But if you enroll in any University for 4 years, your prog professors will do their best to brainwash you.

I disagree with the right-wing misconception of the quote, thinking you become conservative with age and wisdom.
In reality, younger people change the world as they see fit, as you get older, it breaks your heart to see the next generations change the world as they see fit, making you feel like you have no place in it anymore. This causes you to want to preserve some of the ways in which you made the world.
This is what it means, not the silly idea right-wingers have of the quote.

Its a cute and clever statement by a great political mind but it is just a catch phrase. First of all, in the time of Churchill liberal and conservative ideals were much simpler to define.... and he was talking more to the British political system. Americans have bastardized the definitions of "liberal" and "conservative"... it is much more complex than a catch phrase.

That statement says more about charity versus pragmatism. I just think the world is much more complex than putting those two words against each other. We can have charitable conservatives and pragmatic liberals... we can also have selfish liberals and reckless conservatives.

Actualy it has more to do with making more money as one gets older. Then they start to realize how all those wonderful programs are paid for. All of a sudden they dont seem so wonderful.
