My husband was in the hospital for 4 days and I got the bill today for $24,000+. They sent him home only for him to go back a day and a half latter and he has been in ICU since 2/9. I can't wait to get that bill for all you people that say just self pay.

Insurance in this country is a very expensive joke.
You need to get setup on the hospital's sliding scale based system immediately. It is based on your ability to pay FYI.

If you don't have insurance, they won't even see you. I have even been hung up on before by receptionists after telling them I don't have insurance!!

I went much of my childhood with no insurance, we always self paid for doctor's visits and by the grace of God didn't have anything major. For most of my life the "Doctor's Book of Home Remedies" was my health insurance so we knew when it was time to get to a hospital. I don't think that's the right way to live. If my mom and I had had universal health care, she was the caregiver for my elderly grandparents which was a hard job but not a job that offered health insurance or benefits, she might have had her cancer caught earlier and would be alive today.

You are aware that some spider bites are fatal, right?

Here some doctors will see you but you have to pay $375 up front before you go in.

My husband has insurance but I don't and have never heard of the sliding scale system because if I use them and tell them I don't have insurance if I don't pay in 30 days they send it to collections. Thankfully I haven't needed to go in years.

I tried that once, but they demanded tax returns to prove my inability to pay. I was a stripper back then and got only cash direct from the customers - no 1040 or 1099. Just more hoops to jump through, not as straightforward as it sounds.

There's too many tough guys in here to show any weakness lol.

Anyhow, I know some people post and never report back, so here I report: I called today and was gave the run around about how the first bill was from the hospital, this one is for the doctor blah blah blah. I told her it was ridiculous whatever the case to recieve a bill that long after the fact. She ended up agreeing and clearing the balance. I asked to have it in writing, and hopefully this will be behind me. Thanks for the advice and comments.... well, most of you lol.

In October 2010, I got bit by something(spider?) at work. I was feeling dizzy and went to whatever was nearest. Unfortunately, that was a Kaiser nearby. They did some motor skill tests that consisted of me doing things like raising my hands lol. Then they gave me a Benadryll. After Insurance covered some, I was left with a 550.00 bill. I was upset, but hey, it's the ER, what do I expect. So, I take my lump, pay it off. A year later, today, I get a bill for a balance of 150.00 for the same thing. What's wrong with healthcare in this country? It's sad that you have to think about financial ruin when you should be worried about what is ailing you. Luckily, this is more of a major annoyance than financial ruin. But unfortunately, it makes people think twice before getting care. That's the sad part.
Let me tell you about my spider bite experience. We had a brand new duvet on the bed. I should know better and usually I do but this duvet was bought in China. In the middle of the night all of a sudden I felt I had been Shot right in the gut. I jumped up and it was obvious it was an insect bite. It swelled up to the size and hardness if a lime in 10 minutes or so. Off I went to the emergency at the local hospital. They confirmed it was some kind of spider bite and ran all kinds of tests on me. ECG, BP and temp of course, a dozen or so blood tests and they ended up giving me some kind of antibite medication and sent me home telling me to come back in 4 days or if anything new came up. I came back in the 4 days and they ran all the same tests again and told me I should be OK. It took that bite a year to completely go away and I'm now a spider hater. LOL

Now, about the bills for these treatments. Each time I go to the hospital I just show then my health card and that is that. We don't have any such thing as "Medical bills" here in Canada.

You know, back in the early 60's when the government completely socialized the medical system my father was an insurance man who made most of his income selling health insurance. So you can well imagine that I heard all of the same moaning and crying about our, "Communist" government taking over things they had no business doing. Today 40 some years later our medical system is light years ahead of where it was back in the old private business model days. We get good care, great care and exceptional care regardless of the lies you hear about our system. Dr.s and medical professionals make a great income, all people get the care they need, no one goes broke or loses their home because of medical bills, the poor get the same care as the rich and as a resident of our country this care is your RIGHT.

Why, why , why does the richest nation on earth deny this to it's people?
It's just beyond understanding.

In Canada everyone pays into the system....the government can't pay for anything until it taxes it's citizens first (or borrows it).

Isn't this the spider bite that happened at work? Maybe someone else?
