There's no gentle way to put it: People who give in to racism and prejudice may simply be dumb, according to a new study that is bound to stir public controversy.

I do not find this in the least bit surprising.

Default Conservatism thrives on low intelligence

Today's conservatism, as peddled by those with considerable influence in churches, politics and the media is one of division (us vs. them), anger, perceived victimization and rigidity of thought, the results of which breed the following:

Quote:
There is plenty of research showing that low general intelligence in childhood predicts greater prejudice towards people of different ethnicity or sexuality in adulthood. Open-mindedness, flexibility, trust in other people: all these require certain cognitive abilities. Understanding and accepting others – particularly "different" others – requires an enhanced capacity for abstract thinking.
As society, and the world, enters a new information age, with technology at the forefront, conservatives tend to push back: Scientific thinking is scorned. Just read any of the climate change threads to see this anti intellectualism at work. There are two types of leaders in the intellectual movement of the 21st century: Progressives and Regressives.

I don't think this applies to all conservatives, just the ones who post on the internetz, like Stormfront types

Admittedly, much of the conservative movement has been hijacked by radical ideologues, who cling to power like the Soviet Politburo of the 80's.

However, there is no revolution in the offing.

The irony is that intellectual liberals fell for a snake oil salesman who promised them Hope and Change.

As opposed to falling for McCain/Palin? Yeah, I'm sure they regret not voting for that ticket.
