How do they get Section 8? It's very difficult to get Section 8 here because demand far exceeds supply, waiting lists are years long, you have to win a 'lottery' just to get on the waiting list, and you have to wait years for the lottery.
So, instead of having actual policy ideas on how to address the growing income gap and the economy, the right has decided that it's the poor to blame for dwindling middle class. This ranks only slightly more pants-on-head stupid than the, "The poor aren't poor because they have refrigerators," talking point.

The Salvation Army wanted to open a rooming house near downtown for men who work downtown at minimum wage jobs. (There's no way these people could afford to live in Ann Arbor, so they were commuting from outlying areas 10-20 miles away.)
A Republican homeowner in the neighborhoood objected, citing all the social ills which would result (crime, drugs, etc), the Republicans used the issue in the upcoming election, and Democrats played John Kerry - they were for it before they were against it.
Actually a welfare mother with 3 kids can have a equal or higher standard of living than a 2 parent family with 2 kids.
The 2 parent family at 60K is probably bringing home about $4000.00 monthly after taxes. In my area a modest 3 bedroom house rents for about $1500.00, add another $300.00 for gas and electric. Groceries are going to be $800.00 at least. If their health insurance is typical they will have a deductible and copays that could easily add up to $500.00 a month for medical, dental, rx and 1 or 2 ER visits per year. That leaves less than $1000.00 per month for car expenses, clothing, phone etc. and hopefully the kids are not in daycare.
Meanwhile the welfare mother does not pay a dime for groceries or healthcare and if she has a section 8 certificate she can rent the 3 bedroom house next to the wage earners for $200 to $300. Govt. programs will also cover her heat, electric and even cell phone bill. The kids get free breakfast and lunch at school. If she is adept at working the system there are vouchers for clothing, furniture even cars.This leaves plenty of extra cash for hair, nails, tattoos and fast food meals at least a few times a week.
And if she doesn't have a Section 8 voucher (which is hard to get), market rents for 3BR houses are considerably higher than what most homeowners pay for 3BR houses. Renting means you must always pay current rents, unlike homeowners who can enjoy the same low monthly mortgage payment they were making 10 or 20 years ago.
I did mine a few weeks ago.
Single, no kids, no mortgage.
Grossed $73k (minus 401k and insurance) = taxable wages were ~$68k.
I paid ~$11k in fed taxes throughout the year and broke even.
Effective federal rate was 16.2%
Add to that the almost $10k in state tax, SS and medicare.
No, your effective federal rate was lower than 16.2% because 401k and insurance (plus other employer freebees such as paid parking) are compensation and thus are part of the effective tax rate calculation.
Car insurance. In Nj,the poor could opt out of having car insurance. So if I qualified that's
$1900 in my pocket.
I won't even include the savings from rent if I had section 8. My yearly rent is 18,000.
Sometimes some people have to take off the rose colored glasses.
Good luck getting Section 8, you literally need a lot of luck.
