Of course because he knows Assad's days are numbered and probably senses that the uprising has popular support amongst his followers.

It an opportunity for Hamas to gain more power if or when Assad falls.

I doubt it has anything to do with an overriding sense of disgust for the brutal slaughter of Syria's people.

Not really. Hamas is backing the rebels for the same reason that Al Qaeda and Saudi Arabia are siding with them, and Hezbollah and Iran are siding with the regime.

The conflict in Syria is at its core still a conflict between Sunnis and Shia. Assad and most of the high level army and government officials are Alawis, which is a branch of Shia Islam, where as the rebels and most Syrians are Sunni. As such it is not in the traditional Arabs v. Israel framework.
