So then how are they supposed to distinguish without looking at the information in front of them? McVeigh was a normal Joe Citizen right? Would have been nice to have some info on him ahead of time right? What about the Uni-Bomber? You don't know who "Joe Citizen" is UNTIL YOU CHECK THEIR INFORMATION!

How many times do you hear people who knew the people say "He/she was such a nice person" or "I never could imagine them doing that"? Most of them because there wasn't enough information on them ahead of time.

I am not worried about them tracking my Social Media or Internet footprint. I have nothing to worry about. If they have to see that I watch porn or read Japanese Manga at 3 in the morning I don't care. I would rather have that than have someone drive a truck full of pesticide into a mall and blow everyone up.

If they could have prevented 9/11 by using this method of information gathering would you want them to use it or would you rather still have those people die? Your friend should have felt safe knowing that the authorities are watching this stuff.

Full disclosure: I'm a DHS employee, and a regular C-D poster.

None of the discussion that happens here comes anywhere near the threshold for DHS involvement (or and other federal law enforcement activity, for that matter). We are regularly trained and drilled on the 1st Amendment, Privacy Act, and other legal protections all citizens receive. There is a distinct difference between discussing and debating politics, and actively plotting to engage in terrorist activities against the U.S.

As citizens, you have the right to submit a Freedom of Information Act to DHS for any records you believe DHS is keeping. More information on FOIA and the DHS privacy policy are here: www.dhs.gov/foia

Would you agree that you don't know what everyone in your agency is doing?

I have a close friend in one of the FBI, and he readily admits he would know what the person at the next desk is working on much less the whole agency. He works with various data bases and a good bit of time is spent gaining clearances to someone else's turf. After hearing them describe the day in general that stovepiping term seems appropriate.

Yes there are those that feel this way. I am sorry to say I don't like the direction this country is heading or the world in general.

I don't want or need all this govt oversight, monitoring or intervention. I find it to be "self-manifesting" in some very unhealthy ways.

That pretty much sums up the current administration so I think they would feel right at home

Thanks for posting this. It's interesting to hear the perspective from your side of the fence.

Even though you respect the First Amendment and adhere to it, do you yourself not worry that such measures could lead to abuse of power by future governments? I'm all for doing as much as we can to prevent terrorism, but I am also fearful of increased government powers to spy, both here in the US and back in my country, the UK, which is even more of a surveillance society.

What worries me are incidents like this, which surely fall under the realm of using common sense to determine that this wasn't an actual threat:

Twitter: British Tourists Arrested After Making Twitter Jokes | WebProNews

Sorry, but it all seems very creepy and very Orwellian to me.
