Even the 15-20% living near or below the poverty level, the issue may seem fair but in the end we would end up with more people below the poverty level.
But conservatives believe that if you tax something, you get LESS of it, not MORE of it.
There is nothing wrong with tax rates that are the same as long as there is some equity for those making less income (credits to make up for necessities -- the way the FairTax would work).
Except that lower income people face costs of living that people with more money don't.
For example, it costs more to rent than to buy, so people who can't buy a home are forced to pay more for housing than those who own homes.
The FairTax gouges these people by taxing their rent, while homeowners enjoy tax-free purchase of existing homes.
Since the OWS started and Obama’s been pushing to end the Bush cuts for the top 1% and the public at large has been rallying against big banks, bonuses, and bailouts, the Right has taken to accusing the President of instigating class warfare.
The logic is that he’s blaming the woes of the middle class & the poor on the 1% not contributing their fair share. He’s been blaming the budget deficit and resulting fears about our economic stability on the 1% taking advantage of the system. He’s been blaming the 1% for being selfish and lazy and forcing the rest of the country to pick up the slack or go wanting.
Regardless of how true you think the above is, how is that any different than the “class warfare” that Republicans have waged against those on welfare for the last 30 years?
If it’s class warfare to say one group isn’t contributing their fair share, then isn’t it also class warfare to say one group is taking more than their fair share?
If it’s class warfare to blame one group’s hoarding for hurting the country, then isn’t it also class warfare to blame one group’s abuse of the system for hurting the country?
If it’s class warfare to throw out pejoratives like “fat cats” to illustrate the selfishness that’s stopping the country from fixing itself, then isn’t it also class warfare to throw out pejoratives like “welfare queen” to illustrate the same point?
Regardless if the claims are true, the rhetoric is there.
How about the single male or female that has a hard time getting them some? Will you donate your wife to the sexually deprived so that they can get their fair share?
How about the children that don't do test well? Will you allow your kids to donate them some points on their SATs, you know, donate their fair share?
How about the traveling deprived? Will you donate them some gas as gas prices get higher and higher? Will you donate your fair share?
How about your looks? You're a suave and well endowed good looking chap who has no issues with the opposite sex. Will you donate your fair share to the ugly ducklings and the little wee wees?

i was thinking about that when i heard that girl testify to congress that she needed free birth control because it was getting too expensive to go to college and pay for birth control too-while she is in college on the taxpayer's dime, i believe.
i thought that was amazing, and wondered did she also need gas money to drive to meet the guys if they couldn't/wouldn't drive to see her.
where do you draw the line? where does personal responsibility begin in this country anymore?
what she (and all the wannabe future dependents like her) don't realize is that she is actually DEMANDING that someone give their labor for free so she can benefit, since she isn't willing to pay for services.
how selfish is that?
