Just call it gay marriage and normal marriage.

I think a better distinction than that is needed. How about normal marriage vs hell-bound marriage.

"Hook up" fits pretty well.

That's a good term too. I prefer "AIDS Arrangement" myself.

I think a lot of people have a problem with them using the term marriage.
I am in favor of Gay Marriage. I would rather they use a different word but I'm not going to lose sleep over it. Don't ask me why, probably just tradition I guess.

No, the people who have a problem with it need to get a life...big time.

Non-'marriage' same sex unions are easier to pass politically.
And what difference would it make? Society isn't going to refer to people as "civilly unionized". A gay couple will say, "We're married". Society will eventually just recognize it as a marriage, effectively making the status of civil unions irrelevant.

Social conservatives are just too ignorant to realize they don't hold a monopoly on the definition of marriage, and it's not historically a religious concept.

I prefer gay marriage and soon-to-be-failed marriage personally.

Gay couples can say they're married now. I know a bunch of couples, gay and not, who for simplicity sake say they're married.

My only point was that, for whatever reason, use of terms other than 'marriage' are easier politically to pass.

Whether civil unions or dp's are acceptable options until DOMA is repealed or the USSC rules it and laws against ssm are unconstitutional I suppose is something even ssm advocates might not agree on.
