All eight had loose connections to Jewish heritage. They did not identify themselves as Jews and their families had come to Israel to escape hardships in the former Soviet Union, police said.
So, what does it take to have a 'loose connection' to Jewish heritage? Did these guys just choose to embrace criminal lives? So the article says they're Israeli. Is that Israeli Jew, Israeli Arab or Israeli escape artist? Or maybe just Russians who took an opportunity to bail from a country about to plunge into turmoil.

Too many questions. Hopefully the Israeli court will give us an opportunity to learn some truths.

Default Neo-Nazis in Israel?

What an odd news item! One would think these boys should move to a more hospitable country like Russia, France or Germany. Also try some of our southern states for a big welcome.

This is not the first time this has come up in Israel. Last year, there were reports that a gang of Russian immigrants within the IDF was roughing up observant Jews during their military training and service. There were also reports that a Russian IDF unit in the West Bank trashed an elementary school and left pro-Christian graffiti all over the place.

Basically, Israel made it fairly easy for "Russian Jews" to immigrate there. All that was required was documentation that one grandparent was Jewish. So, suddenly, after the collapse of the USSR, there were many non-Jewish Russian families who scoured their ancestry for any traces of Judaism. Some "got lucky" and found some, and immigrated to Israel.

Their children, having been raised Christian or nonreligious, did not always adapt well. They couldn't speak Hebrew. They didn't know anything about Jewish traditions. They resented having to serve in what they saw as a 'Jews-only' military. So, they began to form cliques. Some were more extreme than others.

Due to the size of the Russian population in Israel (over 1 million in a small country), there are likely more such neo-Nazi groups in Israel, though not all are overtly violent. The reason that neo-Nazi symbolism became popular among Russian Christians is probably because it's a way to draw an extremely sharp distinction between themselves and 'the Jews.'

Hey, there's a higher concentration of anti-semitic radicals in northern Idaho and southern Oregon, among other places, than there is in the South.

I'm not saying the South is progressive or that it has caught up with the 19th century, but it's got plenty of company with respect to concentrations of bigotry and ignorance. Ever been to eastern Wyoming? Southern Utah? Heck, there are plenty of redneck towns in the "we're so hip" state of California that have higher concentrations of neo-Nazis than you can find in most Southern states. Human stupidity is pandemic, not endemic.

I would be in favor of putting those Israeli 'whatnot' perps on the front line in Lebanon.

What about dressing them in deer costumes and setting them free in the Texas Hill Country during hunting season?

Those people are just on drugs....or maybe not. After plenty of people here like the Dixie Chicks and Hillary Clinton hate our nation. Not much different from the American liberals who have forgotten about 9-11 and sympathize with our sworn enemies from the Middle East, North Korea, China, and Mexico (the illegals).

And liberals are also very anti-Semitic. Go to any pro-Palestinian protest and all you see is left-wing nuts who support like Hillary Clinton and Natalie Maines and Cindy Sheehan, believe in sixth grade Michael Moore logic (a direct quote from "24"), and support illegal immigrants. Israel is fighting a battle for its survival against a barbaric horde of psychotic terrorists (the Palestinians, Iranians, Lebanese Muslims, and Syrians) and the liberals and Democrats call the Israelis a "Genocidal" country. So its gone from Free Tibet to Free Palestine???

So those neo-Nazis were former Soviets eh????? Commie pinkos never change you know. The Russians will always be our enemies, like the North Koreans and the Cubans.

Yes, many Russians are taking advatnage of Israel's easy immigration laws for anyone with the slightest Jewish ancestry. Many people who are not religious at all are taking advatnage of better lives in Israel.

Now if they suddenly unearthed a large synoaguge complex in the middle of Mexico....ain't that wistful thinking!

Wow.

Your own comments are a form of hate speech. As a supporter of the Dixie Chicks and a "liberal" (of sorts), I cannot begin to tell you how wrong you are. I love this country very much.

Some of us think that our own nation is being hurt by the current administration. That doesn't make us haters of America. Did you oppose the Clinton administration? If so, would that mean you hate America?

Don't lump us all together. I don't like Hillary Clinton and will not vote for her. But I support the rights of musicians to speak their minds about an administration that has led our country down a path that many of us view as destructive to our nation. We speak out against our government because we love America, not because we hate it.

Can you comprehend that? I accept that you have different views from mine, and I don't accuse you of being hate-filled, anti-American or anti-Semitic. Why do you feel a need to heap scorn on everyone who disagrees with your narrow point of view? Sometimes people disagree. It's OK to disagree. It doesn't make either of them evil. We're only human and we're all struggling to understand a very complex, violent and conflicted world. Please, stop the hate!

Pretty strong statements there Terrapin, but how would you describe the large Jewish population of Orthodox Jews (Neturei Karta, True Torah Jews and the like)

I guess these are self hating Jews... man this place gets deep sometime.

Neturei Karta - Orthodox Jews United Against Zionism

True Torah Jews Against Zionism

During times of war, hatred becomes quite respectable, even though it has to masquerade often under the guise of patriotism. - Howard Thruman
