While the union apparatus fights tooth and nail to protect their members from NOT paying their "fair share", the citizens and businesses of Stockton, CA are dying on the vine.
The only way to get out of the corrupt, lavish, sweetheart union contracts is to file bankruptcy.
Look NO FURTHER than California to see liberal policies absolute DESTROY a once thriving, rich, bountiful state.
While people lose their homes, businesses and lives, the union apparatus does all it can to continue screwing the taxpayer for all their worth.
just fire all of the police and have the sheriffs department pick up the slack. a police union without any members is not a union if there are no members in it.
Well stillkit the argument during good economic times is they can afford it and local and state governments shouldn't be so stingy hence the reason for lavish benefits they were able to get.
The simple fact is this, local and state governments are being crushed under these obligations in particular the pension benefits that were handed out in the early part of the last decade. If nothing is done to quote Governor Christie "in ten years you're not going to have a pension at all".
But, right is still right and wrong is still wrong. You make a promise, you keep it, no matter what you have to do.
This is particularly galling coming from the party of "values."

So true. One reason we left the state in '93. My wife is a native San Diegan, and even she wanted to get out. It was becoming impossible to maintain the standard of living that we had worked for, as taxes, fees (a euphemism for 'tax' that they use when the know another tax isn't going to 'fly') were becoming very burdensome, and eroding our descressionary income. Example: Just before we left, our auto registration was due for renewal. It was going to cost (if I remember correctly) about $350 for another year! Here, it's about $38/year.
I love when people who aren't even from California start threads about us, and then act like they know how to solve our problems.
FYI, Stockton is and has always been a hole. I lived there for 3 1/2 years from '99-02, and it was already crumbling to pieces back then! Ask anyone from Northern CA, and they will agree with my assertion of the town... so just like when Vallejo (another pit) declared bankruptcy, most of us are going "big shocker - not." It's sad because that city has some potential, but you definitely can't blame all of their problems on the unions. Have you ever been to Stockton, and do you know about their troubles with crime? Did you think they were thriving before 2008?
Any leftie argument comes back to "But, what about the children?"
Again, you have that backwards... as liberals only "cry about the children" when it comes to providing them with staple foods and basic medical care. But why AREN'T you concerned about the children? Kinda weird, if you ask me.
But, right is still right and wrong is still wrong. You make a promise, you keep it, no matter what you have to do.

Well that means they'll have to raise taxes. How high should taxes go to make good on their promises ?
