Considering they are the vast majority of the GOP (libertarians like to think they are the majority, but social conservatives drastically out number them) probably.
Even within the GOP, there's still not a majority who support extreme social conservatives like Santorum.
Even within the GOP, there's still a huge cap on Santorum's support.
That is because Santorum has no money, no establishment support, and is crazy, had Huckabee entered the race then you would have seen the showing a reasonably respected social conservative could get. With that said Santorum is still getting wins.
Let me put it another 60% of Alabama primary voters and 66% of Mississippi primary voters in the GOP primary didn't believe in evolution. Evolution for crying out loud. That debate in the south should have been settled in the 1920s.
Those people are the GOP base and they are extremely socially conservative.
The United States is not a socially conservative country. A Social conservative therefore cannot capture the center, and so cannot win a national election.

See the bolded. Even most Republicans acknowledge that he's crazy.
I also think anti-Mormon sentiment might have something to do with why he's winning primaries/caucuses.

I agree. It's scary.

But the GOP can't win elections with that base alone.
Santorum is the dream candidate for these people, but he gets little support from anyone else.
I have to give them credit though. They're strongly supporting a Catholic. They're really progressing!
With Willard closing in on the GOP nomination, and McCain having won the last nomination, the last two GOP Presidential candidates have been social moderates. I know Willard claims to be "severely conseravtive" but everybody knows he's a social AND fiscal centrist liberal. McCain's a warmonger but he's pro-choice and wanted Al Gore's VP choice to be his running mate. Will another true conservative EVER win the Presidency?
Well, first off, who was the first social conservative POTUS?
One day you'll get to vote for AeroGuyDC in human form. Social and fiscal conservatism coming right up! Wait and see.
Good thing you can vote for yourself
