Even within the GOP, there's still not a majority who support extreme social conservatives like Santorum.

Mitt Romney.

Willard is what the people on this forum who don't like him call him.

That is because Santorum has no money, no establishment support, and is crazy, had Huckabee entered the race then you would have seen the showing a reasonably respected social conservative could get. With that said Santorum is still getting wins.

Let me put it another 60% of Alabama primary voters and 66% of Mississippi primary voters in the GOP primary didn't believe in evolution. Evolution for crying out loud. That debate in the south should have been settled in the 1920s.

Those people are the GOP base and they are extremely socially conservative.

No. Society progresses for a reason. This is like asking if we'll ever make blacks slaves again. Common sense and rationality will win over ignorance.

Hopefully never.

If we ever get another George W. Bush or Rick Santorum we are all ****ed.

The United States is not a socially conservative country. A Social conservative therefore cannot capture the center, and so cannot win a national election.

See the bolded. Even most Republicans acknowledge that he's crazy.

I also think anti-Mormon sentiment might have something to do with why he's winning primaries/caucuses.

I agree. It's scary.

But the GOP can't win elections with that base alone.

Santorum is the dream candidate for these people, but he gets little support from anyone else.

I have to give them credit though. They're strongly supporting a Catholic. They're really progressing!

Well, first off, who was the first social conservative POTUS?
