Imagine being able to build a network of rail transportation, either commuter, urban, freight, or high speed rail. Now imagine that it can accomodate your own personal vehical, doesn't interfere with ground systems because it's elevated...and it only costs about 5 million dollars per mile.

As opposed to light rail in some places that is about an average rate of 35 million per mile, with just as the name implies...light usage with moderate and heavy usage generally in the higher populated areas. And lets not forget that it's not limited in price to 35 mile...it can go over 100 million per mile...

...and heavy rail costs even more...

Even building new roads and widening lanes for a mile is on average 10-15 million for mostly rural areas with it being much more in urban areas...and it has much less transportation capacity than using rail.

I cannot imagine using such a facility more than once per year regardless of cost.

Why don't we just drill for more oil and get what we need TODAY instead of pipe dreaming 25-35 years down the road.

If the OP is serious about learning more about both the positives and negatives of real-world rail passenger options, here is a site I can recommend; some of the discussions have been going on for years.

RAILROAD.NET • View forum - Passenger Rail

The membership includes rail enthusiasts, current and former operating railroaders, and a number of academics, consultants, and others "in the know", and the discussion is respectful.

Believe me when I say that rail expansion is suitable (but only in certain markets) and economical (but only over the long run); "It ain't that easy."
