From a worldwide perspective, back injuries to nurses have...a lifetime prevalence of 35-80 percent.

Nurses lift, move and turn patients who may easily weigh 250 pounds or more on an hourly basis, and most would consider a 100-pound patient to be “light.” However, many U.S. industries and the U.S. Postal Service follow lifting regulations to the letter by supplying lifting and handling equipment for any loads over 50 pounds or above shoulder height.

Additional risk for nurses comes from the increasing levels of obesity among the general population; the marketing by hospitals of weight loss treatments**, resulting in previously relatively unseen numbers of bariatric surgery patients (who receive surgical treatment for morbid obesity; gender (high numbers of female workers); the aging nurse workforce (more vulnerable to injury or repeat injury)

Training in the use of transfer devices, and regular use of transfer devices, reduced the relative risk from patient transfer. Among the non-work-related factors, only body mass index ≥25 kg/m 2 and immigrant status was associated with a slight increase in relative risk.
^^so much for the BMI cut-off at 35 (but, then again, the facility's policy referenced in the OP is only concerned with appearances by their own admission)

And you're assuming everyone who's overweight will use more health services, which isn't always the case.
Everyone? Of course not, some will die in a car crash because they stop to catch their breath half way across the street.

Life Inc. - Texas hospital says fat people need not apply

This is going to be the world that we live in. Government regulating and managing through a bureaucracy dedicated to perpetuating it's own self interests, under the guise of caring about the people.

The state of health care:
My Mom just passed last month. She was in the hospital for only 8 days, and we just received a bill for $87,000. They only did a few blood tests, an ekg, and a full scan (she had cancer.) She basically slept 22 hours a day under the heavy dosing of morphine. That's $10K a day, no surgery, no treatment... nadda.

On the 8th day, she was moved to a hospice where she passed 18 hours later. They (the hospice) demanded 2 weeks up front ($2200) because medicare/supplement insurance didn't cover hospices (they lied.) We just received a bill from Medicare showing they were billed another $800 (1 day is $160) by the hospice. The hospice has since been shut down for double dipping after 35 years of getting away with it. The abulance service charged $600 for a 20 minute 10 mile drive from the hospital to the hospice.

The state of healthcare is **** poor because it's being managed by greedy ass pencil pushing administrators who only care about THEIR bottom line, and theives - Instead of doctors and nurses.

Now that was just unnecessarily mean, not to mention you're avoiding the point (and facts). I see some people haven't matured since like 3rd grade, and still think it's cool to pick on the fat kids... I have matured beyond elementary school, so this is clearly where I need to stop discussing the issue with you.

Isn't it pathetic how the immature want to sit at the adults' table, just to throw a tantrum.

I find it laughable that the ones who are screaming "smokers and fat people are costing us... and we can't afford them," are also the ones filling the ranks of 99%ers and crying for handouts and social nets. Double standards all the way baby!!!

Hopefully it will motivate them to lose weight. The hospital is promoting good health.

Facts are facts. The government wastes umpteen times the cost of obesity, low-taxed millionaires, and oil subsidies combined. They bank on easily distracted and narrow minded people to focus on the smallest issues. They make all of these things into super causes, while picking your pockets. They keep the real issues like government waste, pet projects, back-room deals, bought politicians...etc. from ever being the main concern. You're absolutely right, facts are facts, so go ahead and focus on these ridiculously insignificant things.

It isn't the employer or the governments job to decide how a person should live their private lives. It starts with your weight, your drink, your tabacco use and moves to which car you can drive, who you can talk to, what you're allowed to watch on TV or listen to on the radio. Good luck with that nanny mentality buried under a pile of hypocritical BS rebranded as concern.

I cannot believe how disingenuous people in this place can be. Half sport well versed logic (even if I don't agree) while the other half recently graduated kindergarten... sheesh!

They want you to be concerned about the obese, while they allow us to eat GMO, artificial sweetners and who know's what else. Yea, these horrible over eaters are the real problem.

Strange how you chose not to address the fact that fatties cost more money to take care of. Being fat is a choice, and the rest of society shouldn't have to subsidize your slovenly behavior.

Being an A-hole is a choice as well. And the rest of society (you know, the good, sensitive people who don't harm others through words ?) definitely shouldn't be forced to subsidize your A-holish behavior.
