My hope is that the city surrounding the government buildings be granted statehood and the federal district in it's core be governed directly by the Feds. That way nobody's house (except the President's) is effected by their wild political whims.
DC statehood is not going to happen unless a prospective Republican state comes along to counterbalance heavily Democrat Washington DC.

Puerto Rico is too much of a 'swinger' to be considered reliably Republican. Guam and the Mariana's are solidly Republican but they are too small population wise for statehood.

Hence Washington DC will never become a state. DC cant even properly manage their house as a Federal District ... how would statehood make things better? The Puerto Ricans, at least under TEA Party Republican Gov. Fortuno, are a model for the rest of the nation. Simply put, DC cannot govern themselves - and no it's not because it's mostly Black but rather because of Black CULTURE.

Good points. It's like the old saying "Heaven kicked me out and hell doesn't want me". DC's slogan could go "Virginia kicked us out and Maryland doesn't want us either".

Honestly, the most frustrating thing about living here is that we can see that with a really good scrubbing of city hall and the local government (and I mean a really good scrubbing) that Washington could be an outstanding place to live.

If the city had good leaders who were honest, innovative, and business minded and were turning Washington into a model city, then DC would undoubtedly win statehood simply because there would be an arguement that the Federal oversight was holding the city back.

And you're right, statehood wouldn't change a thing. The real change needs to come from the voting residents of the city. Clean out the deadbeats and put people into office who want to work. Of course, you have elections like the one Tuesday. Council members run uncontested because no one wants the job.

I'm hoping that just like DC's improving streets the next ten years will bring around some new faces.
