" Why does caring about the environment seem like such a shameful thing to Republicans? "
How on earth did you come to that eroneous conclusion?
A Virginia grade school teacher implant that thought?
That reveals a dyed in the wool propensity for applying prejudicial views to all things. Something that should be discouraged as harmful and counter productive. This same attitude gives rise to racism, sexism and bullying.
Imagine sacrificing tree to mount solar panels! Controveries are occurring on a daily basis as trees are more efficient and useful in so many ways than solar panels.
Any environmentally conscious conservatives on these boards?
What are your thoughts on this?
Can conservatives be stewards of the Earth?
Is it possible? Thanks.
I am not a Conservative, but I thought it might be worthwhile to point out that if you really want to start an honest, open dialog with someone, it is probably best to not start out by making assumptions about the group.
Your question is phrased similarly to: "When did you stop beating your ...?"
It might be better phrased to ask something like: "As a Conservative, what is your environmental policy?"
We're all people that like to be respected, and that includes Conservatives.
The person you are replying to fails to realize that is because of the Republicans in congress that any amnesty has been blocked. She uses a few liberal Republicans to make her case and it just doens't cut it. Reagan himself later regretted the amnesty that he signed. Most non-politican Republicans object to any amnesty also.
Keep pulling the blinders over your eyes, it has always been the GOP that has called for amnesty. Reagan is like the 2nd coming of christ to most GOP'ers and he passed stone cold blanket amnesty. Far right W called for amnesty. Right wing idiot Perry has the welcome mat rolled out for them.
Let's also remember Obama has arrested and deported more illegals than any other president in the history of the nation. Yes, you're reading that correctly, Obama is the most anti-illegal president we have ever had.
You can try to spin it all you want but when it comes down to the facts, the only ones that have passed or proposed amnesty are the GOP.

Stossell had a great show this week to promote his book, No You Can't.
His premise is that gov't cannot do what the free market can. One example he uses is a car that can get 100 miles per gallon. They had a competition, and cars were built by private individuals. By the time they were done testing for safety, one winner was chosen. That's the way progress is made, not the gov't picking winners and losers like the solar industry.
The problem with liberals is they want to use the strong arm of gov't force, and that never works. Unleash the ingenuity of a free people, and they will come up with solutions. Gov't is extremely wasteful, because it's not their money. They blow billions of our dollars on projects with zero return and zero accountability. And they don't know how to create anything. Biden even admitted that he went into politics because he didn't want a real job!
One more example, from above, is the coal industry, which Obama just shut down, perhaps forever. That is a lot of jobs, and products that will be lost. Liberals never seem to look at the consequences of their actions, they just act, and accept no responsibility for the fallout.
Many of the problems the gov't interjects itself to solve, was created by gov't intervention to begin with. CAFO standards, Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations or Factory Farms, as we call them. Horrible places for people as well as the animals, that are pumped full of antibiotics because they breed disease by their very nature. These are the operations that get the gov't subsidies, while ma and pa farmer, doing as nature intended, get inspected and regulated out of existence.
Stossel is a propagandist. The "free market" is the reason you and I don't drive 100 mile per gallon cars, large car and oil companies can buy up the patents for these ultra efficient cars and turn out their shoddy product. Industrial oligarchies are allowed in America because we have way more politicians of both parties owned by industry than not. The major auto companies, if they ever do, will roll out these ultra efficient cars when it is convenient for them when they could just as easily do so tomorrow.Bush's right wing Supreme Court striking down campaign finance laws pretty much makes our lawmakers paid shills of big corporations.
All one needs to do is walk (or preferably, drive) through a democrat neighborhood.
Trash strewn streets, graffiti everywhere, dirt, grit, dirty diapers hanging from trees (I kid you not!), people who STILL pour their used engine oil (among everything else) into the sewer system.
Just look at photos from the aftermath of obamas coronation in DC.
It's hard to hide the truth.
Stereo type much? I`m a retired steelworker living in a nice neighborhood with no dirty diapers hanging anywhere and no graffiti to be found anywhere. My neighbor,a retired bus driver also has a fine home and an acre and a half lot and he`s always been a democrat like myself because the other party has nothing to offer for the working class. My point? You sir are a dyed in the wool racist.
Your problem is that you apparently don't think that it is possible to use our God given resources in an environmentally responsibel way.
Take your "Obama Goggles" off.
I would like to ask you, why is protecting life such a shameful thing to Democrats?
Conservatives are environmentally conscious. We just don't like using the "environment" as and excuse to put businesses out of business, stop people from building a house on land they own, or developers from building on land they own (this has gone on in California for many years) because of made up concerns for things like "snail darters", and "vernal pools" (seasonal mud holes), etc, etc.
Conservatives do not see Man as the center of the Universe, but God, who gave us resources for our good to improve our lives, the intelligence with which he gave us to do.
But great attempt at demagoguery.
lol you have the nerve to call others demagogues when you believe an invisible man in the sky watches over us? Right wingers are obviously gullible people with the intelligence of elementary school kids. Republicans do everything they can to destroy the environment to make a small few very rich like giving the oil companies carte blanche to offshore drill even in light of the BP disaster. Even though a lot of Dems are bought and paid for, I guarantee you electing a Republican president will always inevitably result in chaotic environmental damage.
I don't think moderate republicans have always been antienvironment. Tom McCall in Oregon was instrumental in protecting the Oregon Coast from development. And Nixon helped launch the EPA and a number of other things.
I think the conservatives tend to abhor regulations generally. There is a prevailing view that the resource users will always regulate themselve most efficiently, the polluter will not pollute more than necessary, ranchers always knows best how to ranch, the logger how to log, the miner how to mine, etc. Abundant research and an array of Superfund sites coast to coast has shown these claims of self-policing users to be false. The desire to internalize the short-term profits and externalize the damage (or walk away completely) is overwhelming. Regulations are necessary.
I think the current climate is so juiced up with partisanship that almost any sort of environmental protection will be label ******* job killing, tree hugging mumbo jumbo. In the us vs. them world view, this is a "them" issue. But of course we all lose from a bad environment. It is another example of a self-defeating outcome of partisanship and self-deluding thinking.
Excellent post. I see it didn't take long for the thread to get bogged down in the usual back-n-forth you mention.
Reagan only agreed to that amnesty because the democrats promised him they would shut down the border, so this would never happen again.
They lied, typical.
You couldn't be more wrong. Illegal immigration has reached critical mass now regardless of what state of our economy is in.
Plus it has been proven that they are voting, committing fraud, but it's the democrats that won't allow us to require ID.
