There are parts of the article that said this took place at night. Don't know if this means after dark since the sun is beginning to set later in the day. It's not uncommon for homeless people to break into a vacant home for shelter. it's also not uncommon for thieves to break into a vacant home looking for anything left behind like appliances or copper. However, the neighbors should have called the police and used a camera to record whatever could be seen from their home or walk by and record a license plate number if visible from the road. Who were they, the neighbors, protecting? They knew the home was vacant. I agree it was suspicious behavior but since no one was living in the home then no neighbors were in danger so the guns were over the top. The responding officers were the real idiots. It's one thing for the average citizen to not know what's right, but the responding officers should have verified their statements on the spot or at the station before deciding on arresting and booking.
I'll bet if you were in that couple's shoes, and a couple of black guys held you and your loved one at gunpoint, you'd be saying something different. Stop defending these nitwits. Are these people your cousins or something?
Has anyone seen the movie "Amos & Andrew" starring Samuel L. Jackson? That movie immediately came to mind when reading this thread. I don't recall all of the details, but Samuel L. Jackson's character (a renowned author) also bought a home that had been vacant for months. When a white couple saw him entering the house, they automatically assumed he MUST be a burglar and promptly contacted police. While the movie was hilarious, it also illustrates the pitfalls of prejudice.
Quote:
When Andrew Sterling, a successful black urbanite writer buys a vacation home on a resort in New England the police mistake him for a burglar. After surrounding his home with armed men, Chief Tolliver realizes his mistake and to avoid the bad publicity offers a thief in his jail, Amos Odell a deal. Amos is to pretend to take Andrew prisoner and hold him for ransom but let him go and escape. Amos and Andrew suddenly realize that the Chief's problems are all gone if the two of them both die in a gun battle.
Freedoms and rights, as outlined in your much vaunted constitution, require you to go next door to ASK permission of your neighbour (whom you might never see again in your duration of living there) to enter your OWN house?
What the hell is wrong with you people?
Your rule of law even states "presumption of innocence till proven guilty".
You may as well take that constitution and wipe your arse with it if you're going to cherry pick the parts you like out of the parts that require you actually think and behave responsibly!
You're clearly not responding to anything I posted.
They should have gotten to know the neighbors before they tried to enter the house.
I would probably suggest that the armed yokels should have gotten a clear view of the situation before they decided to brandish.

Just common sense - if you aren't part of the neighborhood - you introduce yourself and allay suspicion.
Common sense should perhaps be expected to kick in before you pull out the bang-bang?

I don't think these people should be charged with any crime.
If someone shows up on my property and point a loaded firearm at me, they'll get the book thrown at them so hard, the sonic boom will be heard for miles.
Well, I was sort of kidding. But I hate when people use the term "racist" and "redneck, hillbilly, good ol' boy, ect" interchangeably. Because they aren't the same thing. And you can be one without being the other.
I called them "good ol' boy" because they are white men from the south (and probably republican) and that's what they are. I can't help it if others called them anything else.
Nice way of saying "retarded" but still allowed to own guns! Sheesh.
You're wrong. Slow and your r word is not the same. There are people that are slow that does not have downs syndrome. You will never see me use the r word because it is offensive.
