So I have been confused on this for some time now. I can't figure out if I am supose to like them or even if they are the same thing.

Last election I was all like those dam Liberals. I so put them in the exact same camp as Demos. Heck I thought they were extreme Demos. So far to the left they ran right off my meter.

But isn't Ron Paul a Liberaterian? I know he is running under the Republican side. But we all know Republican he is not. I don't blame him per say it is a 2 party system after all and I sure don't want him running 3rd party and taking votes away from the Republican side.

So if Ron Paul is a Liberaterian and I like him and what he stands for does that make me a Liberal? Don't get me wrong I won't vote for him but I do love what he stands for, and I do think he is correct in almost all his views.

So if I stand for Liberty and I don't think the Constitution is an out dated document, and I think Goverment should get the heck out of the way and give the power back to the States... What am I?

I do like the Republican Party esp. since the Tea Party. But the further along we get the more faith I lose in it. You have all these Republicans screaming about stuff that is aginst the Constitution. But when it comes to their issuses (Religion, Abortion, Taxes) the Constitution doesn't matter anymore than it does for the other side. But I am starting to ramble....

So are they the same thing? Or are there two parties that sound similar? One L type party on the left and one L type party on the right?

A libertarian believes in self reliance a liberal believes in reliance on the government birth to grave

Like so many words, 'liberal' was hijacked and now means almost the opposite of what it once meant. 200 years ago 'liberal' meant someone who was for individual liberty like Adam Smith and John Locke, who said ""Every man has a property in his own person. This nobody has a right to, but himself."

In the 1920's people like Eugene Debs openly lableled themselves as 'socialist.' But socialism proved to be a unpopular among US voters, so the term was dropped and gradually 'liberalism' was substituted. This rebranding sold especially well among 60's hippie types, who liked the idea of personal freedom, if not its ever present shadow, personal responsibility.

Eventually 'liberalism' fell into disrepute, and 'progressivism' was substituted. Much like a criminal who has to keep making new aliases as his reputation catches up with him.

Libertarians are sometimes called 'classical liberals,' which is to say, they are what liberals were before the term was hijacked.

We've had several threads on this with very detailed explainations and good links. I suggest the OP use the search function.

In short, modern liberalism (a.k.a Progressivism) is the antithesis of classical liberalism (the function of government is to protect and maximize individual liberty).

Libertarians are their own party. There is no "liberal" party, the word is just thrown around by ignorant right wingers that have no argument for a discussion and just blame "da libs" for everything.

Libertarian Party | Maximum Freedom, Minimum Government

Okay, so I like Libertarians and I am against Liberals. Thanks for clearing that up. Also thanks for saying there was another post on this subject I will spend some time and try to find it.

As far as no1brownsfan's question....

I will not vote for Ron Paul because even though he is great we are not ready for him yet. Keep in mind this is only my opinion (sad you have to state the obvious these days) but I don't feel he would get anything done at all. I don't think either Congress or the Senate would do anything he wants he would most likely be a dead president. To make matters worse he would give alot of the power the House has given the President over the years. Making them even more powerful to stand against him.

People think he is going to change everything and I don't think he will. The president doesn't have that much power. Especially a president that is not willing to go against the Constitution. He could over turn presidential orders from past presidents and thats about all.

I myself think you need to hit the House to change things and that is were my focus will be. I really is sad that so many people turn to the president for hope and change. When it is the Congress and the House that we should.

Democrats adopted the word "liberal" to describe themselves several decades ago. Now that they have succeeded in turning that word into a less-than-desirable adjective to apply to themselves, they have, more recently, gone to the word "progressive" to describe themselves.

To the OP; You sound more like a 10th Amendment Tea Party Republican to me.

Sure, but he'll certainly be a thorn in Congress's side.
