Plus there is growing demand for oil from the emerging nations (BRIC) while US demand is down.
Nothing the US can do about that one.

What would happen if Exxon made deep investments into green tech sucking up a whole bunch of subsidies? Being they are tax supported and reliant on politicians funding them is what they have no interest in.

For example there is lot of private investors out there that have sunk millions or hundreds of millions into ethanol. The subsidy has been removed but that is really irrelevant because of the mandate which is the only thing left propping up the industry. If that mandate was to be removed *poof* goes their investment. That would kill the ethanol industry overnight.

That may all be irrelevant and they still may be toast, the tariff imposed on ethanol imported from countries like Brazil has been removed and they can make it much cheaper. US companies will now have to directly compete with these imports and very well may end up going under.

The end result will be US customers paying higher prices at the gas pump for a product imported from Brazil.

Well, in case nobody's noticed, the annual spring price rise for gasoline has begun earlier each spring for the last three years, but so has the break in prices which comes after the intiial increase peaks.

And despite both the usual villification by the knee-jerk liberal crowd, and the attempt by the arch-conservatives to call the recent price break an Obama political ploy, I suspect that the workings of the futures market .... that "greedy speculation" that the people who don't understand supply and demand love to rant about .... had something to do with it.

When a seasonal business knows it's going to use a lot of petroeum over the summer months (A weed-spraying service, or other industrial contractor, is a good example -- I worked for one back in the summer of '06) it can "lock in" a stable price by buying a futures contract at that price.

If the price rises, the user has a slightly-higher, but manageable price guaranteed; if it falls, the user buys on the market at the lower price, and the option becomes worthless.

(And I'll bet some of you economic preschoolers are ranting that it "serves the greedy speculator right!")

This mechanism makes gasoline somewhat more expensive for the casual user, but it also guarantees that some people will have a job to go to.

(Of course, I recognize again that a lot of you OWS-types had hopes of staying at the beach and collecting intstead.)

Supply and demand .... it works .... that's precisely why the parasitic mentality doesn't like it.

If we nationalized Apple, we could cut the cost of an Ipad or Iphone in half.

OR.... would there be so much bureaucracy that those products would double in price ? I suspect they would double.

Actually, I probably only used a tank of gas every two months. I am switching over to an electric car in about 6 months. Waiting for the price to go down. I ride a bike back an forth to work every day. It is simply healthier. Who wants to be a fat dude driving around in a hugE SUV. Waste of money and is an unhealthy lifestyle.

Mannnnnnnnnnnnn, that's way too hard to understand. Their brains aren't that functional.

They also need to stop pounding away on their oil by-product keyboards.

The high tech industry has a much higher profit margin. Apple only paid 9 percent and Google really plays the tax rules to pay very little. It is time to cut off the tax subsidies to the high tech industry and they should pay their fair share.

LOL..... what is it you think Solar will do to replace oil?

Having said that the solar market is driven by huge government subsidies. You're advocating against energy controlled by profitable companies for one that is much more expensive that are only profitable because of taxpayer support and you call it an improvement because of your blind hate for the fossil fuel industry. It's classic example of cutting your nose off to spite your face.
