The embargo is a relic of a time when people thought communism posed a serious threat to world peace and the national security of the United States.
Cuba currently poses no threat whatsoever to the national security of the United States.
The reality is the United States would benefit greatly economically and in relations with other countries in Latin America by having a policy towards Cuba more in line with the realities of today.
And what's ironic about the Miami hardliners' support of the embargo is that if the US lifted the embargo, jobs would be created in Florida, as the closest mainland US state with ports and with a large number of Spanish speaking people who are familiar with the culture.
The obama administration is no different thant the Castro administration, so it doesn't matter. If obama is re-elected we will all be living in Cuba like conditions...
I think you are understating it. If Obama is relected Cuba will start looking good., and their economy will be better than the US.
Fortunately, the "travel" part of the embargo is easier to evade than ever. The Treasury Department doesn't make it much of an enforcement priority, and more Americans are taking advantage of that.
The American government and the corporations have no problem in making agreements with dictatorships, either the Islamic ones or the communist ones (China, Vietnam). Yet, the old Helms Burton is still working. If the embargo was lifted any American could travel directly to Cuba instead of crossing the border to Canada and Mexico and taking a flight from there. That would soften the relationships, there's no better way to undermine a dictatorship than letting people interact with its citziens, especially those who come from a country painted as the eternal enemy by the Cuban propaganda.
It's always been said that it had been done for electoral interests in taking the exile's vote, as Florida is a swinging state. However, mos of the old, hardcore anti-Castro Cubans of Miami are dead by now, and the new generations don't have that remorse against the dictatorship. I certainly believe they are more interested in other issues, and the Cuba question is not their main concern.
Anyone else agrees?
I certainly would drop the sanctions and even start real dipolmatic relations with Cuba A lot of our Miamai Cubans are the thugs, goons and oligarchy who stood behind Batista. This damages our image with several hundred million Latin Americans who view us as nothing more than a bully! Lets prove'm wrong for once.
