Seems like one would have to be brainwash into it?

Freud said it almost always arose from parent-child identification problems and that when things go awry, its pretty set by an early age. I think somewhere between 2 and 4.

Birth, and they come to realize it when they hit puberty, just like everyone else.

Freud thought everything had to do with parenting issues, as we now know, Frued got a lot of things wrong.

Homosexuality - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Look at Etiology (6) for your answer but i'd advise you read the whole thing.

well then you'd be wrong.

I'm gay and i remember knowing i was gay in the sense that i liked boys and felt different on the inside from my peers going back to the 1st or second grade. ( i remember very little or NONE of my life before this)

since it was before puberty i didn't have sexual lust towards other boys but i felt attracted to them and had crushes on them in more of a platonic non sexual way.

also i remember that i felt more gentle or softer than other boys at that age. i didn't like sports, though i was made to join all of them and i preferred playing more gentle games like tag or four square. I also remember in the first grade i liked to play house in playtime at school where most of the other boys avoided this like the plague.

at age twelve when puberty started i felt sexual and romatic attraction to other boys. i had a very deep crush on an older boy but of course i never told my family or friends any of this. i remember also not understanding why my friends liked girls so much.

i was NEVER molested and grew up in a normal family in north dakota. my brother and sister are both straight and my parents are still married.

I was actually the most conservative one. i was the only one of my siblings who regularly went to church, spirituality was and still is very important to me. i even got a degree in religion from the university and at one time was considering becoming a pastor. I didni't come out to my family until i was in my mid twenties, i'm now in my early thirties.

I dated a couple of girls when i was younger but there was NO physical or emotional attracted. it even felt gross kissing them.

never chose to be gay, just always was that way.

If that's the case, would it be like the same type of brainwashing that makes people heterosexual?

It's the same question as asking someone:

"When did you realise you were attracted to the opposite sex?"
or
"When did you realise that you found people attractive?"

Exactly the same.

Children become sexually curious around 4 years of age. By the time they get to school and start interacting independently with peers, they start to identify with a specific gender with regard to sexual attraction (crushes, curiousity, etc). It is usually at this point that most homosexuals will remember back to first "knowing" they were different. Of course, at the time, a 6 year old doesn't really have the skills to verbalize or really figure out what's going on, but the intial realizations are there.
