The new gun rights motto should be "A society in which the psychotic and paranoid can carry guns is a civilized society" How did it work out for the mentally ill guy in Arizona last year?

That's because, if you read the article....the state has made errors.

Still, 3% of the people applying have been turned down.

Also,
Quote:
The audit doesn't list any instances where that's happened, and it's unclear whether any have occurred.
Lastly, the vast majority of gun deaths in IL are gang related. Chicago's shooting stats indicated 80% gang related. These guys are not applying for FOID cards.

You should also note that the pro-gun AND anti-gun crowd have both complained about these errors. Neither wants guys having guns.

So, you keep worrying about the rare nut getting a gun and shooting people....meanwhile there will probably be 5-10 gang shooting deaths without FOID cards in Chicago this weekend. And next weekend.....and next weekend.....and so forth.....

But don't worry, gun control works....just like the war on drugs.

Sounds like a data entry problem to me. Which, of course, you'll find with any data base, even the vaunted FBI list upon which firearms purchases are based.

In any case, it's not significant of anything other than somebody's bureaucratic incompetence and that's hardly a reason to deny everybody the right to carry.

It's ironic that the anti-gun IL government can't run their system correctly and you blame.....the NRA.

Oh, and the vast majority of shootings are unlicensed criminals and you blame.....the NRA.

Interesting how people like you spend so much effort trying to disarm the people that are following the rules and not causing trouble.....and using those that aren't following the rules and shooting people etc. as justification to do so.

It's like trying to ban cars because some people drive drunk. Hey, here is an idea....maybe ARREST THE GANGS and enforce exisiting laws? Nah, disarming the weakest, poorest people so the criminals can prey on them while sitting nice and safe in a winnetka or gold coast residence is better.

Apparently the Illinois system is working since there have been no documented cases of the mentally ill or mentally incompetent obtaining guns or ammunition since 1968. Imagine that!!

One can suppose that the NRA can be credited with that result.

Rejoice NRA, even the mentally ill can have gun permits in Illinois
Only through the incompetence of government can they acquire an FOID card.

So what kind of mental illness removes a person of his/her Constitutional Rights? Any at all? Even if the mentally ill individual has never harmed a fly?

I would say a diagonosis of uncontrollable rage driven homocidal maniac would qualify. Not much else.

Apparently the OP has never filled out a form 4473. To lie on that form, including about one's mental state, is to commit a felony.

A firearm is just a tool. In the hands of the same mentally ill individual an axe, a kitchen knife, a baseball bat, a golf club, or a car, can be just as lethal. If the OP has a point should be make it illegal for Obama to pick up a golf club? Afterall, pathological narcissism is a mental disorder.

If someone is such a threat to society that he/she cannot legally purchase a firearm then why are they on the streets instead of locked up as criminally insane?

They always could. Most of them instead just hire personal security 24/7 instead. Just ask Chicago's former Mayor Daley.

Sorry folks, but as far as I'm concerned, all this bru-ha-ha about guns is completely idiotic. Lock the front door to the barn and nail it shut, but don't even put the back door in the hinges.

1. In one day, I can produce half a dozen guns that are just as lethal as anything bought in a store. Might be only single shot, but you want that first one in your head? (I don't) And, the ammo is actually cheaper at Lowe's or Home Depot. Discarded car batteries have all sorts of lead in them.

2. The controls pertain to "FIRE"arms. They now have pellet guns that can drop a moose, but it's not a "FIRE"arm. It uses compressed air or CO2. Not covered, but if it can drop a moose, what can it do to another person?

3. Try a "POWERHAMMER". You know... The ones that can drive a nail into solid concrete. Hold it horizontal, about 20 feet from a wall, and hit it with a hammer. Ok, it's not as accurate.

If someone wants a gun bad enough, THEY'LL HAVE ONE, regardless what the law says or how well the "system" works.
