For 4 years now companies have been trimming back with less workers. Those workers have to pick up the slack. There's only so much work you can pile on one person and still be semi-productive.
I say semi-productive because as more work piles on then corners are cut, quality slips and worker burnout appears.

This has been going on a lot longer than just the past four years.

You also open your self for charge by HR that you are not meeting the employer's expectations for your job classification and have laid the foundation for a termination for cause (you are fired) which means the employer no longer has to give you severance and you don't qualify for workers comp or unemployment insurance. Mow have a good day, our security man will escort off the premisses. HR will ship you your personnal things when we get around to it.

Look on the bright side that job really bit it!
