Student loan bill fails as Senate gears up for protracted battle - Political Hotsheet - CBS News

The White House called the bill's failure "extremely disappointing" in a statement following the vote.

"It is extremely disappointing that Republicans in the Senate today voted to ask millions of students to pay an average of $1,000 each in order to protect a loophole that allows millionaires to dodge payroll taxes," the statement said.

Senate Republicans, however, object to the way the Democratic bill proposes to pay for the extension. That bill, put forth by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and backed by the White House, would require some privately owned companies to pay higher payroll taxes for Social Security and Medicare.
if democrats want this to pass WHY ARE THEY turning it into a tax bill?

just put forward a stupid bill that addresses the student APR AND THATS IT.

you're being yanked there democrat...

The democrats want America to fail and their plan to ensure the loan bill was not passed proves it.

Then why didnt you know that if the Democratic bill was passed, that it would be unconstitutional?

Whats the "GROVER BOYS" have to do with passing a bill which would be unconstitutional?

Everyone knew this thing wasn't going anywhere.

The House wants to fund it using preventative health care money in keeping with their philosophy of take from the poor and take and take...

The Senate wants to fund it using either roll backs of Big Oil and Gas tax breaks or whatever this nonsense was today in keeping with their attempts to raise revenue from "those who can afford to pay."

Now, we know that the Dems will ultimately cave at zero hour, because they always do.

In the meantime, we have lots of useful soundbites:
"The GOP wants people to get sick and die!"
"The Dems hate people who work for a living."

And, so it goes.

As Lily points out--business tax cuts v. women's health. Those stupid ****s on your side, the ones opposing the bill because it requires closing a tax break, need to rot in hell. Grover Norquist is a deluded and evil man--refuses to raise taxes for anything, even it if was to save a thousand children from a burning barn.

Um, the Constitution says ALL tax raising taxes MUST originate in the HOUSE.. we're discussing the Senate, thus the bill would be illegal as written by Democrats.

btw, you have a lot of hate there in your posting, and not one bit of facts..
