"According to a Surgeon General's report issued last year, some 64 percent of American women breast-feed during their infants' first weeks to month of life. That's better than the 50 percent who breast-fed a decade ago, but it missed the government's goal of having 75 percent of mothers breast-feeding newborns in 2000."
I breastfed my daughter until she was 3 1/2. Didn't hurt anyone and she's a smart, healthy, happy teenager now. Why is everyone so anxious (1) to get in everyone else's business and (2) to proclaim that their way is the only right way?
I believe most medical experts advise mothers to breastfeed for at least a year, if possible, and I read somewhere a few days ago that they have upped that recommendation to the age of two.
No, very few doctors/nurses recommend past 6 months. There are some out there that recommend up to 9 but I think they are harder to come by. They shouldn't recommened ANYTHING though. They should advise their patients of ALL their options and give them support whatever their decisions.

Move on, peeps.
I don't think anyone's "getting into your business"
Were you on the cover of Time?
The article is showing an extreme. You simply fall into that category
because not many woman in America breast feed their baby till
3 1/2 years of age. It might be the norm in impoverished countries
for nutritional and economic reasons. But not here.
The mother referenced in the article was breast fed until she
was six years old, herself. That's not the norm either. And she
admits it in the article. Most of us do actually go beyond the pic.
We read the article...
Don't worry though - her 15 minutes of fame will end,
and peeps will move along
