Any one observing this when it happened understood that the poison would spread around the planet..but most do not want to face reality- Like the reality that cancer causing toxins in the form of crude oil- still lays on the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico---millions of barrels of the stuff...out of sight and out of mind until they see cancer rates in developing children sky rocket in the next five years.
In the 1950s and 60s, when they were recovering from WWII, the USA were pushing nuclear technology as a way for them to meet their booming energy demands. And it worked. Otherwise they'd have had to import their oil, and they don't have abundant coal resources.
But back then they didn't fully understand the ramifications of this technology (and nobody did, really). It's only now that they are starting to see this.
but by the 70s and 80s they were well aware of the inherent risks. and did nothing.
if they had any sense they would have shut down the reactor 20 to 30 years ago.
though the US probably put a lot of pressure on Japan to keep their US-designed reactors running,
because they want to protect the reputation of GE.

This is just another example of corporate capture of government. If anybody here were caught dumping a tiny amount of oil in a waterway, they would be in big trouble yet BP Oil gets to destroy the entire Gulf of Mexico and nothing happens. Same thing on Wall Street where they blew up the entire economy and yet nobody has been held accountable to this day.
Not only is the US government not reporting the truth along with the US media..........NO ONE is doing anything about this disaster. I mean my god people EVERYTHING going on in the world pales in comparison to what danger and threat this will bring. The Japanese government along with TEPCO is downplaying and outright lying about everything going on over there. This is seriously the end of the world type of danger. End of the world for humans as cancer rates sky rocket, food supplies become radiated. This is no joke. This isn't something you just sweep under the rug. The Russians had the balls to cement Chernobyl so it wouldn't spread. The Japanese need to cowboy up and seal this damn thing off. Cost is not an issue. I don't care if this costs trillions. The entire planet including the world's oceans and the west coast of the US is threatened. People say oh we'll just move south of the equator. Yeah right. Americans flooding into Mexico to get to SA? Like SA is just going to take us all in? Gimme a break. Our government are a bunch of limp wristed slack jawed frakkets. And no bigger one than Obummer. Talking about gay marriage while this mess is spewing massive amounts of radiation into the air and ocean. Pathetic.

FWIW - The Fukishima reactors withstood the earthquake without damage. The destruction of the emergency power supply by the tsunami is what did them in. This was a record breaking tsunami well above any record or reasonable prediction. The planet can still surprise us.
There is radiation and radioactive substances leaking from the damaged reactors but this is not the end of the world or even the end of Northern Japan. Steps will be taken as soon as the immediate (10 meters or so) area of the leaking reactor cools down below lethal levels. Then the reactor will be encased or cut up and buried somewhere.
This is one incident in a long history of safe operation of nuclear electric power. Chernobyl was a massive operating error that was the result of some boneheaded fool. These are the only incidents where anyone was injured let alone killed. We should not let these keep us from pursuing nuclear power as no other source has the capability of providing the concentrated quantities of energy with the potential for creating more fuel than it consumes.
These reactors, when combined with full fuel recycle are mankind’s’ perpetual power machine that can provide the heat to waste carbon into petroleum substitute and well as provide electricity and district heat at the same time. We should not let a couple of “accidents” frighten us away from a technology that offers a first world high energy life style to everyone on the planet. We have learned how to properly plan, design build and operate a safe nuclear power industry. Now we have to get back on track and build it.
