A significant percentage comes from the general fund ($32 billion from the general fund vs. $11.5 billion from property taxes). Federal funds constitute $8 billion to the state of CA. Other local revenue sources constitute $4.4 billion and lottery revenues constitute $0.8 billion.

So what makes you think when they say they are willing to pay more, that they arent discussing property taxes..

Well if property tax increases were allowed to be higher then that would be on the table. In fact, I think that would be better to raise property taxes and slightly raise income taxes rather than make the largest increases come from income taxes.

Forty years of ballot initiative processes (Prop 1, etc.) that have hamstrung state legislature from raising taxes to keep revenue apace with spending. Allowing voters to vote on tax increases is an asinine way to run a government.

Agreed. Why let a little thing like the California constitution get in the way? We should just all bend over and let the moon bats have their way.

Does anyone happen to know what is the highest unemployment rate which Austin has endured over the past decade, and how long has it been in the 5.5%-7% range, which is extremely impressive, all things considered?

Unless I'm mistaken, isn't Austin a pretty liberal city compared to DFW, San Antonio or Houston?

Socially liberal, fiscally more conservative. Keep Austin weird.

Based on the CA CAFR I see no need for austerity or tax increases. Does anybody actually look at those in the public before deciding to hand over more money to the govt?
California Government Hides Billions From Taxpayers

quote:
TOTAL FOR ALL INVESTMENT FUNDS = $577,315,060,000 (approx)
“And you must understand that this is only the State government’s CAFR. Each County, city, district, and other local governments and pension funds have their own CAFR’s with their own funds and hidden wealth – hidden in plain sight. Totals for Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other counties and municipalities in California will, when combined together, dwarf the investment wealth of the State government alone.”
