I think they aren't reaching out because I am black, I live in a predominately black neighborhood in a republican state and none of my republican representatives, whether campaigning or otherwise have ever set foot in my neighborhood. On the contrary, President Obama set up his campaign headquarters in my neighborhood not far from my house. I have met around 8 different people running for offices locally in my neighborhood at festivals and such in mine and neighborhoods that surround my neighborhood (all of which are predominately black all those running were democrats). To be honest, the last mayoral candidate here in Atlanta, Mary Norwood, a white woman who lost to our current mayor and who was supposedly a republican did come to my neighborhood and she campaigned here and our neighborhood turned out the vote for her in large numbers due to her stance on code violations, which are an issue for us, and using the homeless to clean up the city, basically paying them minimum wage to keep the neighborhood clean. Even heavily democratic people in my neighborhood had her signs in their yards and went out to canvass for her. So to say that black people wouldn't be open to hearing from a candidate who is not a dem is mistaken.

In regards to signing up for the military, all the people I know who signed up were those who didn't have any other career options... and that goes for military people of all races. The military has great perks like tuition reimbursement, family support, bonuses and the options for geographic relocation.
Over 80% of black Americans according to statistics, attend church regularly. Also, I as an American don't think you are much of an American to criticize people who put their lives in harms way in order to defend our country. Blacks make up almost 20% of military personnel and many go into the military for a career. A lot of my extended family went to the Air Force especially, one of my cousins was one of the first black women in the Air Force. She stayed in for 20 years as did her two brothers and a few other of my cousins. Pretty much all of my older male relatives are veterans and all of them had other career options. One of my cousins retired and worked as a pilot, many pilots start off in the military and you can gain a lot of skills via military involvement. He now works as an independent contractor in the middle east and makes a ton of money. Again I feel bad for you for your ignorant generalizations. You are pity worthy.

ETA: Forgot to mention that less than 2% of the black population is in prison, so to think that there is a "large" percentage of us in prison is incorrect.

I think Miu is getting his/her opinion about the military off the Internet or TV. It’s actually disturbing for someone without any knowledge of the facts to be making sweeping generalizations like that. This is not the past. People usually enlist for many reasons like school, training, traveling, serving country, etc. Being an Army vet I’ve only met maybe two people during my almost 5 years of service who didn’t have another option. And those two people were still worth more then their critics.

I do however, blame our government for allowing an illegal invasion of our country that is stealing our jobs and raping our tax coffers. Why aren't blacks more outraged about that? They are being pushed off of their jobs and out of their neighbohoods by them.
The government deserves most of the blame for the problems this nation faces. Most of the blame goes on the federal government.

If the Republicans became a left leaning party, Id vote for them. America doesn't have one, they have the far right GOP and the center right Democrats.

Nothing like a little comedy to bring some relief. If the republicans became left leaning, they would be democrats..!
The democrats are a couple of lanes over from really far left. If JFK were alive today, he would be a republican. He would hate what the democratic party has become. He hated socialism....

Powell was only GOP bc it was a smart career move. Dude was a progressive.

You have no idea what you're talking about or what socialism is. We don't even have universal health care in this country and that would be the most basic socialist thing. Other than a few religious/social issues, there's really no difference between Obama and JFK, both are economically center right. There is no left in this country, only the far right wingers think so since they think of people like John McCain and Richard Lugar as the far left.
