The quest for a totally safe America continues

Texting While Walking Banned in New Jersey Town | ABC News Blogs - Yahoo!

Quote:
Ripoli said the borough, which is home to approximately 35,000 residents, has suffered three fatal pedestrian-involved accidents this year. He hopes his crackdown on people who display dangerous behavior while walking will make his town safer, but not everyone is on board with the idea of issuing $85 tickets.
No, we're not becoming a police state at all

Someone needs to let the Government know that the only Law that should apply to this is Darwin's. If you text, walk and die it's your own dumb a$$ fault.

Its about time. Im sick of walking around people who are oblivious that anything around them exists except for their phones. tluv, I agree with your theory too, but its nice to have some sort of human interaction instead of walking through the set of The Walking Dead everytime your walking somewhere. No one pays any attention to anyone anymore, they are more interested in their virtual reality than what actual reality is.

So your imposing your personal interaction requirements on all those around you? What if I don't want to pay attention to you? What if I don't GAF that you even exist? Don't I have a right to ignore you and focus on the things I think are important as long as it doesn't harm you? How are you that important?

Bulldogdad, You are 100% correct. I feel the same way. My problems are with smartphones, they make it too easy to disengage from society. Thats my only problem, other than that what you wrote sums up exactly the way I feel.

There are many archaic laws on the books that were enacted to prevent activities that did not endanger lives. I don't see this law as being that over the top. It's the dumbed down texting every time you fart habit that is over the top.

Real Funny Dumb Laws in the United States

15 of the Dumbest Laws Still On The Books

Quote:
According to a May 17th article in The Boston Globe titled “Caution: Texting on Foot a Hazard,” Jocelyn Nagy was at the corner of Dorchester Avenue and West Broadway in Boston, texting while walking as was her habit, when she walked out in front of an approaching car. Her foot was run over. Nagy then proceeded to check to see if she could still walk and then returned to her texting: “I just got hit by a car!” she texted.

Approximately 75,000 people are injured in pedestrian accidents every year in the United States. Many suffer serious debilitating injuries as a result, injuries which will forever change their lives. According to the United States Department of Transportation, accidents involving pedestrians comprise the second largest category of deaths due to motor vehicles. 15 percent of all deaths due to motor vehicles are the result of pedestrian accidents. Each day serious pedestrian accidents occur on America’s city streets, and when an automobile is involved in a collision with a pedestrian, it is the pedestrian who is most vulnerable to suffering serious injury. As the result of pedestrian accidents, families face significant financial losses which include costs of medical treatment, medicines, rehabilitation, and loss of ability to earn wages.

Well lets flesh this out. Exactly what about smartphones do you have issue with? That's what I use to text along with many other business and personal functions.

I wonder how many of those who have run into lamp posts while texting think it to be pretty unsafe. Think of the possible damage to a human face.
