Still, I am going for broke. I'm pretty much unemployed, living with my parents, and I live in a place I don't want to be(Paulding County,GA), so I have nothing to lose by applying. It does make me wonder if I will be discriminated against.
You probably will, but think of it this way: wouldn't you rather be ignored while you're still safe at home in the USA than have them offer the job sight-unseen and then you go flying halfway around the world and get "shown the door" when you arrive?? And then you'd be halfway around the world, and unable to appeal to any "human rights" laws or anti-discrimination laws because there AREN'T ANY. (And don't even think the US Embassies are anything but LESS THAN USELESS.)

And would you want to go to another country and be treated WORSE as a teacher than you would here, with, again, no recourse in terms of law because those countries don't HAVE ANY.

As a MAN that's one thing. As a woman, I stay firmly rooted on North American soil for that reason (the added problem of being treated like a prostitute when they see me instead of the TEACHER.)

Bad link.

Well, being ignored while in the USA would be less of a danger than going there and being shown the door. On the other hand, this is the way I look at it. In this situation, where I could be discriminated against, I look at this from what is right vs what is wrong. I care about how I get affected at the end of the day.

As for me, well, I finally have work again, the pay is decent, and I'm trying to save up and move out of my parents house. I gave up on trying to teach abroad.

It angers me alot that my personal merit would not be used. However, I can't do anything over there because I'm not from their and they way things are done over there, well, I have no jurisdiction over it.

China isn't stupid.

You have lawsuits all over the US because minorities are not passing tests needed for employment.
Why would China want people that cannot read, comprehend and analyze English ?

You think news like that doesn't reach other countries ?

Sometimes the minorities shoot themselves in the foot with their victimhood.

So what you're saying that it's okay to assume that because someone is Black, that they can't read, comprehend, or analyze English?

Chinese schools hire foreign teachers to boost their "prestige".
Since white teachers are more "prestigious" in China, naturally they would spend the money on white teachers.

Asian Americans are discriminated in China too.

In short, giving into the thought processes of racial supremacy. Disturbing.

Not necessarily a supremacy thing. If they hire a basketball coach, blacks may be preferred.

In the 1990s, some Chinese companies hired white foreigners to be fake "managers" to show up in meetings and parties, just to show they are "international".

I have couple of friends who struggled to find employment here in the U.S. after getting out of Marine Corps. I used my own connection to find them teaching jobs in Japan.

I think landing a teaching job in Japan is easier for people who 1. Have a strong British or American accent
2. are Bilingual Japanese and English. Race is a non factor.

Don't know if this is true in China.

Teaching in a foreign country has pros and cons. It is good for people with reasonable expectations. This is not a get rich quick job obviously. But you should be able to save some money quickly.

This guy wrote a pretty interesting article about teaching English in Japan

Why Teach English in Japan? | The Japan Guy

Hopefully it is true for China as well.

For Japanese, white teachers are elegant, classy, and they represent America or England, black teachers are fun, cool, interesting. Their culture is respected. I really don't believe race is a factor.

Best of luck.

Many Chinese Americans have this sense of entitlement in China, at least this is what I heard.

When I was in China, one thing I really like about Chinese is that they are friendly people. But then again, I am mixed. I think they are very nice to Japanese/white mixed individuals.
