Denmark - "....Strict laws require parents seeking to name their child something other than one of the 7,000 government-approved names must get their choice officially approved by Copenhagen University’s Names Investigation Department......"

France - .....Although a 1966 law permitted alternative spellings, foreign names, and diminutives, it wasn’t until 1993 that parents were given free reign of what to name their children....."

New Zealand - "This country has a running list of names banned from the official registrar...."

Germany - "......One must be able to tell if your child is a boy or a girl based on their first name (what would we do with all those Taylors, Jaimes, and Jordans?)...."

Wish we had that here.

The one-upsmanship of "my kid is different like all of the other different kids" is getting out of control.

How do you "pick your country"?

I'm sure other countries laugh at our laws to.

You get 10 years for selling a joint? We do have a very high prison population.

I have to wonder about parents who give their children weird names. I wouldn't want to go through life with a name like "Dweezle" or "Moon Unit".

I went to a child abuse seminar once where it was said that kids with such names have a higher rate of abuse. They are tied to extremely high parental expectations.

Somebody makes in inappropriate comment and it is immediately deemed a bi-partisan issue? How nice and moronic of you.

At any rate, do these laws also apply to people changing their names? Here are some real names - some of them were officially changed by the adult bearing that name, some were given at birth:

I can see that happening.

They probably do get a lot more abuse from their peers.......all that teasing about what a crazy name the child has.
