I think one reason for some of the roles(in terms of race) could be traced to MTV. I'm not saying MTV is the whole reason. I'm saying MTV encourages it.
Another thing I'm theorizing is the impact of the 80s. Hip-hop really started to become popular in the 80s. The hip-hop culture/ghetto culture was starting to take root, but it was in the early stages. I might argue that because of its relative infancy, it was there, everyone knew about it, there were still other subcultures out there that were competing. The computer nerd subculture was burgeoning. Youth culture in general was going through a transition. Techno had just been invented, heavy metal was getting popular. In the 80s, The Cosby Show was very popular and well liked. The 80s was a time where so many forces were at work, and to a certain extent, the 90s.
One thing I'm finding, is the level of comfort. Today was my first class of the summer semester. On one side of the class, it is all White, and on the other side, all of the Black students and 2 White students, and when a few more White students came in, they congregated on the side that was all White.
When I entered the class, I was looking for a front seat(horrible vision) and I am the only person on my row. I wondered about something. I had to wonder if this was a matter of coincidence, or if this was a matter of comfort level. It is a sticky subject to talk about. Maybe some people don't want to talk about it because of the level of trust.
I thought about this thread because it talks about if Generation Y is more racist. Everyone in the class except on student is from Generation Y. We have on Generation Xer.
