Bishop Fulton Sheen advocated the taxation of religious institutions on the grounds that the Catholic Church owed a debt to society and that paying taxes would be fulfilling its debt to society.
Taxing religious institutions would mean they would be free to directly comment on politics - they would become like PACs.
What would be the difference between now than then? If not for religious zealots, what would the state of Republicanism be?
"When you say 'radical right' today, I think of these moneymaking ventures by fellows like Pat Robertson and others who are trying to take the Republican Party and make a religious organization out of it. If that ever happens, kiss politics goodbye."
- Barry Goldwater, 1994
