Same-sex "marriage" is only the latest skirmish. The war against marriage in the West began with the protestant revolt.

1. Luther authorizes divorce for adultery and abandonment. Henry VIII makes a career of it.

2. More reasons are found to legitimize divorce to the point where "no fault" divorce is practically the law of the land.

3. The Church of England authorizes contraception within marriage in extremely limited cases.

4. Once again the exception becomes the rule and contraception is now ubiquitous.

5. Cohabitation gains respectability in the 1970s. Today the practice is almost universal.

6. Same-sex "marriage" is the logical result of dissolving the link between marriage, sex, and procreation.

7. What will be next? One hesitates to ask ...

The people who have destroyed marriages are the ones in it.

I live with my boyfriend and we have a child. I am the breadwinner while he stays home with our baby girl.

Omg, I am also responsible for the war on marriages!

......sue me.

That was once the case. Today married people have a lot of unmarried help.

You forgot the bit about the age of consent being introduced and children no longer being married off by their parents.

I don't see how any of this is a "war on marriage". Either you want to be married or you don't, all the laws and rules in the world can't make one actually work.

Marriage in Ancient Greece and Rome

While marriage was deemed important, it was usually treated as a practical matter without much romantic significance. A father arranged the most advantageous marriage for his son and then had a contract signed before witnesses. Shortly thereafter a wedding celebration was held and the young couple (who might never have met before) was escorted to bed. All marriages were monogamous. As a rule, the bridegroom was in his thirties and the bride was a teenager. In addition to this disparity in ages there also existed an inequality in education and political rights. Women were considered inferior to men and remained confined to the home. Their main function as wives was to produce children and to manage the household while their husbands tended to public affairs. For their erotic needs, men often turned to prostitutes and concubines.

Marriage in Ancient Israel

The ancient Israelites had a patriarchal family structure. The status of women was low—they were regarded as the property of their fathers or husbands and could do nothing without their consent. The main purpose of marriage was procreation and the perpetuation of a man's name. A man could have several wives and concubines. (Jacob married two sisters, Leah and Rachel, and Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines.) Divorce was not encouraged, but permitted if a man found some "uncleanness" in his wife. That is BS. People make their own choices. They need to start owning up to it.

How does my relationship affect other people's marriages? How would a gay couple affect someone else's marriage?

People don't marry as often as they used to because they have realize a piece of paper for the most part means nothing. Anyone can walk out of a marriage if they want to, a piece of paper won't keep that from happening.

Marriage is not what is cracked up to be. If someone is not committed to his/her relationship and partner, the relationship most like won't hav a future. I know plenty of people who got married because "that's what society expects". It is all so silly.

Live your life the way you want to (without harming and infringing on other people's rights) and stop worrying about everyone else.

Each marriage is independent it's not a club, what others do doesn't affect mine, 34 years and going strong.
