I was under the impression that some of that money the US was giving Pakistan was for their mutual cooperation with the US on the "War on Terror"? If there was "mutual cooperatoin" why has this man been convicted for being a traitor?

Quote:
A Pakistani court imposed a 33-year sentence yesterday on a doctor who assisted the CIA in the hunt for Osama bin Laden, prompting dismay among United States officials and warnings that the punishment will exacerbate already strained relations and could lead to cuts in aid.

The CIA declined to comment yesterday on Afridi's sentence. But a senior U.S. official with knowledge of counterterrorism operations in Pakistan said the surgeon "was never asked to spy on Pakistan."

"He was asked only to help locate al-Qaida terrorists, who threaten Pakistan and the U.S.," the official said. "His activities were not treasonous; they were heroic and patriotic."
Pakistan: Doctor sentenced for treason | Concord Monitor

The US/CIA recruited this man and owes it to him to get him out of Pakistan.

Side Note:
I am almost finished reading (another) book by a US infantryman who was based on the Afghani side of the border from Pakistan and how Pakistan aided, assisted and supported the "enemy". How the enemy would cross over into Pakistan and fire at the Americans and the US could not fire back - because it was Pakistan. (North/South Vietnam replay?) Books like this, hearing from the men who fought, telling the truth, only illustrates the lies the US government tells the American people. We should have never been there or should have pulled out long ago.

Pakistan is a paid 'friend', known more commonly as a prostitute in most circles.

We do not have any "friends" in that part of the world. We only have client states (Israel) and countries we bribe (Saudi Arabia, Pakistan). I figure the first will continue to shake us down for guns and money and the latter will eventually get in a war with India and be eliminated. We should get out of the entire Mideast and let them settle their own differences.

We should have pulled anyone we hired to help us kill bin Laden out of that country the day before we snuffed the man. Having this spy captured and probably killed in a Pakistani rat house will not encourage others to help us. That is not a good thing. We have to pay our spies with money and safety. The money is worthless if the spy is dead.

I've NEVER been confused about US-Pakistan relationship, and I'm sure that would have been the case if I were even a teenager during Nixon years. Pakistan is yet another example of decades of failed foreign policy.

Default I'm Confused. Is Pakistan our Enemy or Ally? Pakistani Dr. convicted for helping CIA track down OBL.

Pakistan is definitely an ally. That's why we get all the top al qaeda criminals there. Doesn't it seem a little strange to anyone else that almost all of these terrorists are Saudis, but we never get our hands on any of them from our "ally" Saudi Arabia?

If your average female had Pakistan as an acquaintance, she would refer to it as a "frienemy."
