Ruth4 truth. How does this make it polite? So if someone calls me white they are being rude? They should say hey that caucasion man, or that Lithuanian American guy over there. This is what I dont see. There is nothing impolite about being referred to as black.

As far as a native American...they occupied this land before it was America. We took the land from them and eventually they became American citizens. If you are Native that means you are originally from a place. Such as I am Native to NH. They are the natives of America.

If you want to be polite African Americans should be called native Africans then.

You seem to assume that all Caucasians are White, that White has been used as an oppressive tactic by non-Whites, and that you can call anybody with African heritage (as you brag your Lithuanian to be) is automatically black.

If white is acceptable, black is acceptable then what about people of other races? Should we follow that consistency? Or adhere to cultural/ethnic ties instead (if we must)?

I think hyphenating everyone divides us.

We call people African American and they are not from Africa. We call people Italian American that are not from Italy. Its as if we are creating new nations within a nation.

That's the difference between "native Californian" and "Native Californian". You are not Native to NH, you are native to NH. Use of the capital letter denotes ethnicity. as in Black, vs. black, or German, French, Chinese, etc.

Yes, "White" is a crude word. (Try translating it into other languages. It sounds awful! Really crude and rude.) That's why people used to use the term "Caucasian", though that's also somewhat of a misnomer. Euro-American is actually the best term. As I posted earlier, there are political reasons why it hasn't caught on.

LOL! Good point. I'm sure "Yellow" would go over well with certain people...

I think it's a silly term that gets used whether or not
the person has African ancestry or is an American.

North of the border, do they call em African-Canadian?

(too many syllables too.)
